Greetings from Central Oregon

John Hargreaves

Interestingly enough Bae built 3 frigates for the Indonesian navy which had reduced sized hatches and doors etc. for the smaller size of their sailors requested in their design brief. The Indonesians decided they could not afford the ships and Bae were left to find another buyer. The Frigates sat in dock for over 4 years as these hatches and doors made them unacceptable to most other navies.

A more likely origin for "snipes" is the fact that the bird (same one than gave us "sniper" it's an elusive little sucker) is a marsh native. Early engine rooms being notably wet and steamy, it wouldn't have been a big stretch to think of the engine crew as snipes living in the marsh. There's an 18th century complaint about engineering officers in general (I believe in the Bonnett "Price of Admiralty") that directly compares a 19th century engine room to a "snipe marsh".

Has there ever been a case where flatulence was mistaken for a dangerous hydrogen sulfide build up? Which resulted in test equipment being brought in and venting procedures begun? Was the ship's mess ever reprimanded in these situations?

I normally would never advocate visiting Connecticut, but have you considered adding the USS Nautilus to your US East coast tour? It is about halfway between Boston and NY and well worth the stop in my opinion.
