Steam turbine propulsion, enabled by the development of high-power gearcases, was regarded as an attractive form of machinery, "if it wasn't for those bloody boilers". Gas turbine, and later nuclear reactors, banished the fuelled boiler from marine propulsion.

My (low) understanding of turbo-electric drives was this enabled the steam turbine to be used without a gearcase. I believe this is why turbo-electric drive was developed for the WW 2 T2 tankers, while the Liberty ships were fitted with the relatively low-tech triple expansion engines, fed by Scotch boilers.
