Naruto and luffy both know what their limits are when it comes to taking dmg and dealing dmg. When luffy got hit by a kaido for the first time he was out cold and sent to prison. If Naruto got hit by a kaido in the same situation, kurama would come out. The point is luffy never has a hidden power just come out to save him or defeat the villain. Up until this awakening, which I argue is still not the same thing because an awakening can only happen once and will not be able to save him again
