Don't they hear better from long distances because the air up there is thinner than if it was back on the ground all the way back down? Something about sound travelling better in thinner air?

Nah, it's just the White Beret guy's internal monologue. It's a way of storytelling using the least amount of panels (since this originates from a manga) but still answers and shows as much direct information as possible. Oda will use a character's internal thought process to let the reader know the answer to a question or situation that he just presents. Like how the crew was just discussing pursuit, and the next scene is the White Beret explaining through thought WHY they weren't pursuing.
