A lot of people consider Skypeia to be the worst arc, and you might as well. Honestly, it depends on your taste. The action isn't great but the story is awesome. That's all I can really say. Stick with it doods!

About the bird-like seaking Lycan mentioned: Just after Loguetown there was a canon scene in the beginning of episode 55 which you guys skipped since it was technically part of a filler arc where they end up going into the Calm Belt, which they explain is the area outside either side of the Grand Line where there is no wind or currents to sail with and Sea Kings are known to nest there. This is the explanation for why you can't just enter the Grand Line from the sides and must go through Reverse Mountain. When they arrive there they find themselves stranded right on top of a Sea King nest and several especially gigantic Sea Kings rise up from the ocean beneath them, one of which is the bird Sea King you were talking about!
