The closest time the series references the movie continuity wise was Dawn's Lunar Wing. She bought it in the Darkrai Movie and it showed up in 104 episode of Diamond and Pearl. However, it's a minor reference and apparently, the episode is a bit confusing as to whether or not Ash actually recognizes Darkrai.

I believe the reason Ash was sleeping on the floor is that Misty was using his bed.

Again this is something later seasons of the show got once we actaully moved into the Hoenn and Sinnoh run and the like: if you're going to have rivals and characters constantly competiting with our heroes we actually do want to see them tussle. Honestly Ash and Gary really only have two honest battles in this series: one at the very end of the Orange league going into Johto and one in the Johto league like... 3 seasons later so having teases like this and not following up on them is pretty annoying. Especially since yeah this is the first real episode you do get to see Ash and Gary actually become a bit more friendly (I guess you could argue the badge episode of Gary seeing Ash's team power and then helping tackle Meowth but I think you're explaination of Gary being "out of it after getting punked by Mewtwo" makes more sense especially why he doesn't remember Meowth talking there) and the relationship suddenly becomes less a "ha ha Gary's a jerk who is always one step ahead of Ash" as we get to talk about the two's style and about the layout of the world. Honestly as a kid I was into that and even into getting to know about Gary and not totally hating him but I still wanted to see them fight and to be teased like that and not getting anything feels... insulting especially since again the two aren't going to fight in the Indigo League and man is that such a disappointment. I do feel at least the characterization here was actually solid and the comedic fluff at least made more sense but glad you brought up how disappointing some aspects were even though yeah some aspects were solid. And honestly thinking about it, Oak back hand repriemanding his Grandson for his battling style is something Oak in the game does when in the end Red beats Blue and Oak gives his grandson a major talking down so I could see them doing that here but yeah a lot of solid ideas for an episode but it was too much of a tease especially when it takes awhile for it to lead to an event we really want to see. On the plus side though there are a bunch of at least really enteraining filler epiosdes before the tourney begins and I remember the next one with Slowpoke especialy being good so curious to how you're review of that will go.

Given that 'Go West, Young Meowth' was only a few episodes away, I wonder if Oak and Garry's reaction was supposed to be a remind the audience to take note of the oddity of a talking pokemon?

I remember enjoying this episode when I first saw it but all the episodes after the final gym were sprinkled with impatience for the League. Thankfully, this was balanced out by the plethora of Pokémon everywhere instead of the usual 'mon of the week n that's all you get, kiddies. *weeps joyous tears at stinger*

This episode was really funny, especially the dubbed jokes.

"Your powers are great, old man. I felt that from 20 years in the future" literally made me start coughing at my desk to hide my laughter.
