Hi Daria, I am a new subscriber. You are truly a talented artist. I have been going through most of your videos, they are very helpful. I had a quick question though, what variations would you consider making if you are painting a brown person’s skin tone? Would you use yellow ochre as opposed to cad yellow?

Daria Callie

Hi JP, thank you for joining! For simplicity, I use the same color palette every time. I like to premix a few main tones for the skin before painting and I mix them from the following colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue. You can use yellow ochre but I personally find it simpler to mix any skin tone using this limited palette. For brown tones generally I’d use burnt umber with a little bit of cad orange, a tiny amount of ultramarine blue and some titanium white, but of course it depends on the tone, the lighting, etc.. Hope this helps! :)

How to get the palette to stay up vertical beside the painting? So beautiful 💗

Daria Callie

Hi Julianne! I make sure it’s propped up against the board (or a canvas) in a sturdy position on the easel, and then I tape it on the bottom and on the side with some artist tape so that it doesn’t move.
