With the Kickstarter to finish Lustfall once and for all nearly 20% funded already and many Update 9 commissions in the works, it's been a good kind of chaotic over here. This would normally be a PREVIEW WEEK, but since everything is still in progress, there's nothing to preview this time. That being said, I could use a short break from the posting, so it's not a huge deal. Next week we'll be back on track BUT FIRST, let's have another poll!

Reverse Power Fantasy Games

I saw a discussion the other week about a game that came out being described as a "Reverse Power Fantasy" and found the concept rather interesting.

From what I understand, it's a type of game (usually RPGs) that starts you off incredibly powerful, like, "one-shot-the-final-boss" levels of powerful. At the game goes on, the more mistakes you make or traps you fall into, the weaker you become. Like, you would permanently level down slowly, until you had to struggle to defeat even the weakest trash mobs.

I'm wondering how people feel about games like this. I can see the appeal from the fantasy side of things... but making compelling gameplay that works with the intent of becoming LESS powerful seems tricky to pull off. Has it been done well before? Is frustration the point?

Feel free to chime in here or on the discord.

The best example of it I've seen is a very short JRPG where you can easily walk in and beat the final boss immediately. The ACTUAL narrative of the game is that each time you lose, instead of getting a game over they do bad things to you and you start again weaker. Often naked, surrounded by guards, and/or tied up. And each time you keep losing the story gets deeper, allies show up (and also get weaker through additional losses) and so on. And at each level you can (with enough skill) beat the final boss and get an ending, though the endings are progressively worse for the protagonist (and better for the horny player) the further you go. The game is Kamikaze Kommittee Ouka 2. Which I'm sure is heavily censored on Steam (FOR GOOD REASON.) But you can get an idea of the gameplay that way, or pick it up on DLSite if you want to see everything.

Oh, I think I've seen that game before! Very interesting concept, but from the reviews it seems like a lot of people miss the point. I suppose the challenge would be making things obvious that beating the boss at max power is not the game, but the first step.
