Hey everyone!

I hope you're all doing ok! Here is episode 43 of your exclusive Patroncast!

In this one, I talk about:

- 00:50 The channel, and how allergies completely wrecked me last week, plus thinking of trying my hand at 3D printing (ideas and suggestions welcome)

- 13:18 GNOME's new Executive Director, and how I think people are really either misunderstanding her role, or just don't really know what you're supposed to look for in an Executive position

Let me know your thoughts about this!

I hope you'll enjoy listening to the episode, and I hope you'll all have a great week!

Nick

Hi Nick, it's really unfortunate how bad your allergic reaction got to your girlfriend's cat, hopefully you can get some proper medication that will mitigate the symptoms. As for the Gnome foundation getting a new director, I do wonder how well Holly Million will be able to supervise the foundation and raise money for it too. I do think that someone with more technical background would have been a better fit at least to raise money from more technical backers like for example Google or Canonical. I think that someone with a technical background would have better argumentative power to raise money from backers that work in tech.

I'd say that she would probably have a nice brief before meeting with any big industry leader, and she probably wouldn't go unaccompanied either. I'm sure she'll also be trained and she'll have help learning how GNOME works :) Time will tell!

Gnome is in serious trouble. I think that the concerns of the community are extremely well founded. She could have all the experience in the tech and/or open-source world and it wouldn't matter. Her quote on the foundation website tells you all that you need to know. “I am impressed by the international reach of the GNOME community and the DIVERSITY of the individuals involved in creating all of this amazing output. Together, you have created something so powerful that can be further harnessed to create even more SOCIAL benefit.” Diversity, Inclusion and Equity or DIE. Yes I have them in the proper order because that is what happens when a company focuses on them. Signature or Silicon Valley Banks ring a bell? The world is still paying for those woke debacles. She rounds out her quote by also mentioning an element of ESG. Yes, she is clearly WOKE...Big Time! Now there is a show topic for you. The dangerous future of Gnome BECAUSE of this and how it is poison for a well run company.

Ehh no, I'm sorry, but that's complete nonsense. Cherry picking words with a positive connotation to try and make them look like they're a bad thing, that's something I'll never understand (unless of course, it was sarcasm, which I hope). "Woke" doesn't exist. It's a buzzword that always seems to describe someone trying to not be a dick to others. No company ever died of being "woke". Companies die because they're badly managed.
