Hey everyone!

I hope you're all doing well, here is your new episode of the Patroncast!

In this one, I talk about:

- 00:50 Windows in the cloud, as Microsoft seems to want to move personal computing to the cloud, I reflect on why I think it's a horrible idea

- 13:35 Adblock blocked on youtube: it's just an experiment, and at first, I thought "cool, more ad revenue", but after a few days of thinking about it, I think it would actually hurt my channel if adblock ddin't work on youtube anymore.

- 22:56 Channel related stuff: last week's videos, the first video made by the production agency, and more!

I hope you'll enjoy listening to this one!

Have a great week :)

Hey Nick, I hope your week started well 🙂. About YouTube blocking adblockers... I understand why YouTube does it but it really annoys me. I use Ublock origin on Firefox on both mobile and desktop plus AdAway on Android. I dislike ads for multiple reasons, be it on YouTube, other websites or android apps, but the main reason I absolutely hate ads is that Google allows ads that are straight scams, even worse when it's on their official YouTube app. How many times did I get a fake Mr Beast free money giveaway. How many times did I get calls from older family members asking me why their phones were showing them ads saying their memory was full or that they had viruses, on the official YouTube app, on an uncompromised phone, just to make them download apps on the play store. And don't get me started about Windows computers, ads are the main reason why friends and family got their computers infected. Unfortunately, I know that if YouTube enforces the no adblocker policy, I'll pay for premium for me and my parents because of how much they enjoy their content without ads. But it annoys me to pay for an ad less experience... It really annoys me... I could use a third party app for YouTube like Newpipe on mobile, but the user experience isn't that great especially for my parents or older relatives and let's face it, it's just a matter of time before Google cracks down on third part apps like Reddit is currently doing on mobile. Now about content creators, I think that relying on ads for revenue is a bad idea. Sure it's revenue and it pays something for the content they created, but sadly I think that ad revenue will continue to pay them less as time goes on, not to mention that it may be detrimental to them as ads might push away viewers from their content. I think that free content published online should be used as a way for the creator to advertise for a paid product or service they offer. I'd rather have a YouTuber ask me to become a YouTube member or to give them some money through a superthanks than watch ads. Making it more enticing for viewers to become members or donate money is easier said than done though, I can understand that. I still can't believe how long it took YouTube to implement superthanks and memberships and I'd really like to see YouTube implement something like Gumroad on their platform to allow content creators to sell ebooks, guides and other dematerialized content directly through YouTube. YouTube seriously needs to diversify their revenue streams, ads are so 2006 😒. They have the potential to make YouTube an amazing platform for creators but they don't seem to care for them that much, music video clips probably being their main revenue source.

I would not mind some ads for a newpapers, but modern oline ads are horrible, especially if you are privacy minded, even if I consult a local newspaper website using my brand new Google Pixel Tablet with precise location enabled (I bought it directly from Google, they have my address anyway) but with most other privacy option activated, I would get 0 local ads and 100% random American scam (I am not even american). At that point, why would I let the ads active even if I would like to support said newspaper.

I recently reinstalled my OS (#distrohopping) and figured I watch some Youtube while setting up everything else.. so fresh browser with no Ad-blocker and WOW was that a horrible, horrible experience. I didn't even make it through a 15 min video before ragequitting lol. There is no way I would ever watch a minute of youtube without some form of ad-blocking. I'd propably end up paying for Youtube Premium depending on the price. But I wonder if Youtube would want to push people to watch ads or push them to premium, because I don't think creators get a cut from the premium subscriptions? As a sidenote I find it kinda funny how so many tech companies pushed for growth at all cost, while getting users used to a certain experience and then when they want to shift to profitability there is no way forward without significantly changing the user-experience and subsequently loosing their userbase.

Yeah, these are perfect examples of company that can't work as anything other than startups, funded by venture capitalism. Once they can't raise money that easily, because it's been too long, or their userbase is huge, and investors think they should be profitable by now, you see that the ad based model simply doesn't work in most cases. Creators do get a cut from premium subscriptions, the revenue is shared between youtube, and then the channels you watch, the more of a channel you watched compared to your total watch time, the more of that premium subscription the creator gets :)
