Hi everyone, this was a request I recorded a LONG time ago! I've seen many people around commenting that they would love to see this one. So here we are! I am always nervous to post stuff that I recorded a while ago, and especially the requests :).

I wish you all a great start to the new year! Enjoy!

Just like you, I fell in love with this movie the very first time I saw it. I'm dating myself here, but I owned this movie on VHS before we even had a VCR at home yet. So I used to take the tape with me on babysitting jobs and play it after the kids went to bed. The iconic Singin' in the Rain number is even more amazing because Gene Kelly was sick with the flu the day he filmed it. He had a fever of something like 103 degrees. (Not sure what that would be in Celsius.) The other lore from the filming is that Gene was apparently something of a bully on set and Debbie Reynolds was his primary victim. He kept telling her she wasn't good enough in the dance numbers. She ended up getting some offstage coaching from Fred Astaire at one point. And in later years, Gene admitted that he behaved terribly toward her and they ended up being good friends. But actually, my big discovery in this movie was Donald O'Connor. I became sort of obsessed with him. He didn't get too many romantic lead parts (Call Me Madam is one of them and it's delightful) but he had a steady stream of roles as the comic relief.

This reminds me of A Clock Work Orange.

A couple of interesting bits of trivia for this movie: When Donald O'Connor did the musical number for "Make 'em Laugh", the routine was so physical that it took him a week to recover from the bruising. Not only that, but the cameraman had the wrong lens in the camera, rendering the film unusable. So, he had to do the whole thing all over again.... Jean Hagen, the actress who played Lina Lamont, actually had a very good voice. In fact, there were a couple of scenes where Debbie Reynolds' voice wasn't good enough and Jean had to lip sync for her. So, in the scene where Kathy Selden is lip syncing for Lina Lamont, it was actually the other way around, with Jean Hagen (the actress who played Lina) lip syncing for Debbie Reynolds (the actress who played Kathy)....

Okay, it's time to introduce: 'Midnight Musicals With Mary!' Once a month musical Patreon exclusive. There are so many great musicals. One you may like because there is a memorable song, 'Mary'. The movie is 1942, 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. It is a bio pic of George M. Cohen and his family in show business. He was the biggest Broadway star of early 1900s. The movie's lead actor won the Oscar for Best Actor that year, James Cagney. Cohen was all things in one,. He produced, directed, wrote, composed, sang, danced, and starred in many of that era's biggest Broadway shows. There is a statue of him in Times Square. He was the first show business person to receive U.S. Congressional Medal for two songs he wrote. 'Grand Old Flag' and 'Over There'. The movie director is Michael Curtiz. He also directed Casablanca, White Christmas, and many other great movies. Would love to hear back on this idea.
