hi Mary hope your journey is going well so far, guess you'll be flying to the states soon huh? hope everything goes smoothly, but don't worry too much if it doesn't. thank you for all your efforts to keep things going while you're away, (too bad about firefly oh well) can't wait to watch these movies with ya. :)

Eric

I'm a bigger DC fan than Marvel, but I really, really, REALLY think you shouldn't bother with the DCU. The movies are various degrees of terrible; the very first movie was made by somebody who doesn't like comic books in general or Superman specifically, and it didn't get any better after that. (It isn't just a bad *comic book* movie, it's just a bad movie; it was edited out of order and nobody seemed to notice, it was just released like that.) I've heard mixed reviews on "Birds of Prey" and I'm sure "The Suicide Squad" is good, but I haven't bothered to watch them because the DCU was just DOA. If you want to watch "Wonder Woman" for the obvious reasons, I can endorse that. I think it's really stupid and misguided as part of the DCU for reasons I won't get into (spoiler-y; at least spoiler-adjacent), but as a standalone movie it's really good. The ending is a bit lackluster (more generic than bad), but it wouldn't be out of place in the MCU. (But it's terribly out of place in the DCU, it just is so much better and less hateful than the rest of the DCU.) The first DCU movie, Man of Steel, ostensibly about Superman, was made by somebody who doesn't believe in heroes or generosity of spirit. It's just.. it entirely misses the point of superheroes. Please skip it.

With so many superhero (and superhero-adjacent) movies flying around, it can definitely get confusing. :) The basic Batman "mythology" is pretty consistent across different incarnations, but in terms of continuity, Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy is self-contained. The standalone "Joker" movie has nothing to do with it (which is just as well, because it's awful).

I know this, but right about now she's getting ready to fly to the states first

The big difference between the DC universe and the Marvel universe is that once Marvel decided to launch as a movie studio (which was after the New Line Blade movies, 20th Century Fox X-Men movies, the Sam Raimi Sony Spider-Man movies, and the 20th Century Fox Fantastic Four movies, among other scattered adaptations), they made the ambitious choice to tie it all together into a "cinematic universe." The first four Superman and Batman movies, starting with Superman (1978) and Batman (1989) form individual series. Superman Returns was a sequel just to the original Superman, ignoring II-IV. Then, the Nolan Batman trilogy. By the time the Nolan Batman trilogy ended in 2012, the MCU was a huge success, so DC tried to copy the formula, making a new series starting with Man of Steel. Various movies are connected to this line, including the Wonder Woman films, Aquaman, Shazam, Suicide Squad, and Birds of Prey. However, there are other movies, like Joker, which are NOT connected. Joker, in fact, is not connected to any other DC movie, it is a stand-alone you could watch all by itself. I personally don't recommend it, I thought it was quite bad, but it sounds like you already want to see it. Looking forward to at least one of the two remaining Nolan Batmans, as well as Memento and Inception whenever you get to those as well. The only Nolan film I really dislike is Dunkirk, which I hated.

Joker is like an incel fantasy turned into a movie. It's the kind of bad movie that most people don't realize is bad, because they only look at the surface level, not what the movie is actually saying.

Great reaction! Excited for the rest of the trilogy. I'm not surprised theres a lot of people hating on the dc movies, since marvel has kinda made a formula thtat services pretty much everyone. In my opinion is worth giving them a shot, the good and bad thing about the dc universe is that pretty much everything but the snyder trilogy are standalone, so you could try watching man of steel and if you dont like it then skip Batman v Superman and Justice League. But i would recommend Wonder woman, Aquaman and Shazam, they are not masterpieces but they're good enough to fit into the marvel universe formula. Also The Suicide Squad is a fun watch. And even though they are in the same universe, each is pretty much standalone. Whatever you decide to do if i can give a suggestion would be to watch Watchmen(2009), everyone will tell you that its a bad adaptation of the highly acclaimed graphic novel (and it is) but personally i like to see people react to it, specially when they have watched many traditional superhero movies marvel and dc. In any case hope your vacation goes well, looking forward for whats to come!

Joker is a completely stand alone film that is essentially a telling of his origin. It has no connection to any other film in the DCEU, Nolan, Snyder, or otherwise, but I'd still highly recommend it at some point. The Nolan Batman trilogy is it's own contained story as well. After that you have the Snyder trilogy, Man of Steel (Highly recommended) would be your jumping in point for the DCEU. Followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (ultimate edition) and Justice League (the Snyder cut). For the most part, that trilogy is self contained as well, as WB/DC is trying to distance themselves from the Snyder films. Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey, Shazam, Aquaman, and The Suicide Squad (2021) would be loosely connected films to the Snyder trilogy. There is good and bad among those films depending on who you talk to. Overall it's a fun ride though. Great reaction as always. The Nolan trilogy really is pretty amazing. I look forward to your reaction for The Dark Knight. IMHO the Nolan trilogy has been the best complete story arc for a live action DC character in film produced by WB. Although I do love the Snyder trilogy as well. And yes, if you were asking, the kid in Batman Begins is Jack Gleeson who played Joffrey Baratheon on GOT. :)

Brian Jones

I would totally disagree with your take on the DCEU and would say you aren't too familiar with Snyder either. Your take on MOS literally makes no sense.

Brian Jones

I really don't understand why anyone would say Watchmen is a "bad adaptation". Well over half the movie is literally the comic put on screen. Especially the ultimate cut with the Black Freighter animation. Overall I love the film and thought Snyder did a really good job bringing it to screen. It captures the same essential message as the comic, and other than the ending, really is just a live version of the comic.

I'm so happy you enjoyed this movie. The next one is my favorite. I really wanted The Dark Knight to win Best Picture. I never thought I'd say that about a comic book movie. Batman Begins sets everything up perfectly for the next 2 films. The Joker is not set in this trilogy and is a stand alone movie. Great reaction Mary.

I can't believe people stay that about Watchmen. I read the graphic novel when it was released and again before the movie and I felt the movie held true to the novel. There were some shots that gave me goosebumps because they were straight out of the graphic novel. The only thing that was different was the ending of course, but I feel they did a better job with it. It was more contemporary with the times.

Watyusei

Oh i completly agree, Watchmen is one of my favourite "superheroe" movies. Its just a common critic of the film. I hope Mary decides to watch it, theres A LOT of reactors that go on the mcu journey or even the dc one and never react to watchmen and i think they are missing out.

Brian Jones

Sadly, the MCU (primarily because of it's formulaic nature and popularity) gets most all the attention when it comes to comic book films. I like the MCU as much as anyone else, but there's so much more in the genre that's great. The Blade films minus the third, The Crow, Watchmen, 300, the Burton Batman films, Sin City, the Donner Superman films, The X-Men films, the Snyder trilogy, Scott Pilgrim, Kick-Ass, Constantine, 30 Days of Night, and probably a whole lot more I'm forgetting off the top of my head. Such a wide variety that it would be a shame if someone where only to focus on the modern MCU or even DC universes exclusively.

woo cant wait for TDK and DKR!! BOTH are incredible, and i KNOW youll love them

Tyler Foster

I imagine that spacing them out was to avoid monotony, but gah!

Tyler Foster

Don't worry Dave. I believe Joker is bad on both the surface level and the deeper level!
