Hi peeps!

The moment I recorded this I really need a good laugh, so it came at a great time!

It's very interesting to see a satire on these interracial relationships in America, as a non-American. The jokes are really harsh, but then I try to remind myself that the goal of the movie is not to be like that, but to be a satire without avoiding subjects like race.

What were your favourite jokes of the movie? I really liked the fact that there was clearly a bit too much intimacy going on in this town with everyone having the same last name :D. Also the "Where the white women at?" still makes me chuckle.

Most definitely not a film that could be made in today’s climate. Even at the time it was made it was controversial. I’ll be watching this tonight with you, can’t wait!!!

The Inedible Mattman!

A huge part of understanding the humor in this film is having an intimate knowledge of the racial issues of America. For most Americans, there are subtle things that they can see and get based on our own history. I can only imagine how confusing this film must be to people from countries which didn't have to go through all of this!! But I'm very happy you're watching this film. In my opinion, it's one of the best and most important comedies of all time. Mel Brooks is a genius who understands the vaudvillian humor. You should TOTALLY watch his other films! Young Frankenstein History of the World Part 1 Robin Hood - Men In Tights Spaceballs Dracula Dead and Loving It

Welcome to the mad, wonderful world of Mel Brooks. :) His other stone-cold classic is YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, which was actually made right after BLAZING SADDLES, and came out the same year. It's a parody of classic monster movies, but it's still pretty funny even if you haven't seen those. His later movies aren't quite as good, but they still have their moments. You might enjoy SPACEBALLS, as it spoofs a lot of sci-fi stuff like Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.

You should check out Young Frankenstein. I think you would really enjoy it.

Lol this should be interesting

A few jokes you might have missed: "Howard Johnson's" was an American restaurant chain, now an American hotel chain, so the business in town with 1 ice cream flavor was a joke where the chain existed in the old West (as well as a continuation of the joke where everyone in the town is named Johnson). Hedy Lamarr was a famous Old Hollywood actress, which is who Hedley keeps getting confused with. She also notably invented technology that would later be adapted into WiFi. Jesse Owens was a Black gold medal winner at the 1936 Olympics in track and field, which is why Bart jokes that he's going to do an impression of him right before running away. Young Frankenstein and The Producers are Mel Brooks' other two undisputed masterpieces, although Spaceballs would probably be great for you since that parodies things you've already seen (Young Frankenstein is obviously a spoof of the original 1931 Frankenstein; The Producers is an original script not spoofing anything). I also highly recommend Clue, which is probably the most famous role Madeline Kahn (Lili Von Schtupp) played outside of Brooks's movies.

People say this, but I don't think that's true at all. I have yet to see a younger-generation YouTuber react to this and not understand the point of the jokes. It's jokes about race without clarity of satire like Blazing Saddles has that would probably get torpedoed.

Young Frankenstein is the best thing he has directed. Also with Gene Wilder and Madeline Kahn.

Mr. Writhms

The part of the sherriff was supposed to be played by comic legend Richard Pryor. But his drug habits back then made it difficult for him to keep the shooting schedule so the role went to Cleavon Little. But Richard Pryor still had a part in writing the script, including all of the racial jokes being written by him. That’s how Mel Brooks avoided any backlash from this hilarious movie.

My favorite line of the movie was actually cut. During the scene where Miss Lilli and Bart are making out in the dark, Lilli keeps repeating “It’s twue, it’s twue”. Richard Pryor wanted Bart to reply “You’re sucking on my arm.”

oh...my...god, that is FUNNY! Wish it would of made the movie

I agree that "Young Frankenstein" should be your next Mel Brooks movie. And, speaking of Mel, he played both the Mayor and the Indian Chief in this movie. He often shows up in his movies.

While most people would get the point, no studio would make this film today. They would be more worried about the backlash of the few than the approval of most.

Brian Jones

Agreed...... While reactors may actually be getting the satirical nature of the film, there have certainly been campaigns on Twitter and the like to get the film taken off streaming platforms. There will always be that crazy fringe regardless of what you do. But sadly, given corporations bending the knee to that crazy fringe, there is no way that a major studio in the current climate would touch a project like this with a ten foot pole.

Tyler Foster

I honestly don't believe that either! Might not be a major studio like Warner Bros. these days, but I definitely think this could still get made.
