Happy new year all of you!

Calling attempt #1 done.
Man it's tricky to photograph these things. I assume it does get a bit better when they're not wet anymore but hoh boy. Especially because i only have a phone to take pictures with and phones just slap all sorts of post processing on it, so the picture is much more saturated than it actually is. And it being dark now with the lights i have set up being a bit warm it probably messes with the sensor as well.

It's rather messy in spots, especially the face where i tried to put in some subtle detailing but then it became to obvious and trying to merge it back it made it all sorts of weird and whatnot. And of course plenty strokes in there that probably could have been left away and that now stick out a bit...but which i didn't want to fiddle about with because then it would just end up like the other times i over-fiddled!...

But yeah all in all it, unsurprisingly, comes much more naturally than watercolour does. Still will need some getting used to of course, just getting a feel for how the paint behaves, but all in all it's much easier to get it do what i want it do.

All in all though pretty happy with how it turned out! Think this one will continue with a good deal less frustration than the watercolour attempt. (though i also already am looking anxiously at my wallet judging by how much of the lavender paint thinner is already used up :') )

I'd know that handsome snout anywhere :) Several years back I went to a few "Bob Ross method" oil-painting workshops (very enjoyable), and he, or whatever legal entity represents him now, had a line of quick-drying oil paints. The landscapes I did were dry enough to move (carefully) in hours; completely dry in days. So such things exist. I don't know if they'd be suitable for what you want to do!

Nomax

Yeah there are a bunch of different options. But honestly not too fussed about by now. It's oils, they're slow. It's what they are so i'm fine waiting.

Sandy

Ooh, that's lovely! I'm eager to see more

Came out v nicely! Hope you had fun with it too<3 Also happy new years ^^

Nomax

Thank you very much. Yeah was decent fun which is nice. Hopefully it can become a bit of switchup from digital. Which is what i hoped watercolour would become initially. Just something different here and there... but that never quite materialized unfortunately.

Nomax

Thank you. Yeah hopefully January will include plenty more :)

That looks pretty damn cool! Will you be working on it further once it dries, or will you experiment with different layers in future oil projects!

Nomax

Thank you. Nah this one is done as it is. Didn't want to go all crazy with multiple layers right away. And knowing when it's dry enough to work on it will be a massive pain as i doubt i've kept good care of the amount of oil and paint thinner. So other layers would probably just mess it up entirely.

I suspect that you will have some technical issues with the medium, but it looks like your work! This is wonderful work, and I am really glad that you are working in a 'real' medium rather than digital. This one is all you, your skills, and your eye. Nothing to add or subtract from the product. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Nomax

Thank you. Yeah I'd be surprised if it all works out without any hiccups. All the little intricacies and weird little quirks of paint is only really something that can be learned through the mistakes along the way. Read up on what to generally keep in mind of course, but without the context of at least some experience it never means all that much.

sunkawakan

I agree. However, I am still amazed at how much of your style carries from digital to oil. I think this is the medium you were meant for!

That's really impressive for a first go!

Nice and juicy!

Alden

I definitely agree! I would not have thought this was a first attempt

When you are doing a self-portrait like this Nomax, do you tend to use a mirror or a photograph?

Alden

Are you considering selling this?

Nomax

This one might already be going to JhWolf as a thank you thing. But who knows, given how long these need to dry i might give him the chance to pick one of them rather than forcing this one on him. Sooooo, answer is a "maybe". I also don't even know yet if they'll turn out good. Could still have screwed something up and cause them to get fucked while drying. Only really will know in a few months time.

Alden

Oh, wow, I didn't think it would take that long to dry. No wonder you are posting them when they are still wet.
