Fun fact! EXO was considered somewhat of a mistake for not succeeding to the same level as previous SM groups and was put on a hiatus for about a year when they debuted. They released MAMA in both languages and then released nothing until a year later when they came back with Wolf/Growl with their XOXO album. Also yeah 2014 and 2015 were rough years for EXO. Kris announced his departure right before their first concert so they had to alter and rechoreograph everything to fit 11 members (to fan understanding/what the company released made it seem like he did not talk it through with the rest of the guys at all beforehand. This is not confirmed but that is the feeling that was expressed), and before the group could even begin to recover from that initial "scandal" Luhan announced his departure in October. A lot of people thought this would be the end of EXO because they were only in their second year of being considered popular so many thought this would ruin their careers indefinitely. They persevered however and even with Tao announcing his departure (at the request of his dad who wrote a letter about SMs bad treatment towards his son and asking Tao to think about his health and leave the company) they've maintained a pretty solid position in the industry to this day

About 2014.... It was when some of the chinese members left (luhan and kris), you know the motto is "Exo we are one" so many fans started doubting the boys and left too; also Baekhyun's relationship with a member of girls generation was confirmed (for a rookie to date a gg member and years ago when kpop wasn't so open to other cultures could be like a public death warrant for him). Also the were still "rookies", pressured and visibly physically exhausted by SM they would faint at airports, music shows, concerts... always got injured and press basically flopped them. So it really seemed like at some point all they had was the remaining exo-ls and their members... (I mean, as Baek said, they didn't even have phones or couldn't even eat what they wanted)
