Oh man  -- where to start!!!

SO, as I'm wrapping up production Trilby Dogtooth: Monster Killer, I thought I could use my recently acquired "skills" with 3D software BLENDER to create and texture a 3D environment that would look similar enough to the painted 2D backgrounds that are onscreen for 90% of the cartoon.

I thought that if I could match the look of the 2D images I could seamlessly blend the two and save myself time in the process -- LOL!!

It turns out that modelling and texturing the environment in 3D is an absolutely huge undertaking and I am still far from finishing. It just took waaay longer than anticipated. I WILL finish this and use the 3D backgrounds in the cartoon so the experiment isn't a total failure, but I'm not sure that I'm currently speedy enough with Blender to make this a preferable option over drawing 2D images.

Am I done with 3D? Definitely not. I've been using the software for less than a month and have already learned a lot. I can see ways it can save me a lot of time in the future so even if this experiment didn't yield huge time-saving results, I am encouraged thus far :)

Yeh making 3D, especially when ya first start, can take lotsa time! Once yuu made something once, though, yuu can re-use it (and edit as ya need) as often as yuu want which can be just magical! Though having handpainted models fit in different scenes will likely have yuu going back and forth with photoshop, once yuu have all props yuu need it mainly comes down to set dressing once for multiple backgrounds. Can't wait to see more dood!

Thanks man!! Yeah I'll definitely keep at it, I see way too many opportunities with 3D that aren't available to me in 2D. Hand painting textures are a biiiiitch tho

Yeh I tried looking for the best way to hand paint textures, and just about everyone is at least somewhat awkward. Substance Painter has a rly cool way to seamlessly paint between the.. umm... seams; Blender's UI and brushes work, but are kind of awkward/clunky to use; and Photoshop (at least at the time, dunno about now) had awkward 3D navigating controls. They all got workarounds tho, but they're still a pain!

You could hire someone who is well versed in using Blender to do the basic backgrounds for you, or hire them to make places that you know will be used often like the Starbarians ship.

Whoa! That looks really close to the original 2D background. Try looking at how Cedric Babouche "converts" his 2D art into 3D, if you get the time. Maybe useful.

You know what they say about learning something new... nothing worth learning was learned in a day!
