HANK! Another good anticipation, Jrabbit! Kim and Jimmy, codependent partners in self-destruction. One bad day has Kim chucking beer bottles off a balcony and Jimmy doesn't need an explanation of why, he's in lock-step with her right from the first throw. And just 24 hours ago she thought it was gonna be a great day. 24 hours ago she was looking at the beer bottle balanced on the railing in what looked like fear, like she knew it wouldn't take more than a nudge for it to go crashing down over the edge. Kim has been standing on the edge of a precipice for a while now, between pro-bono work and Mesa Verde. And the pressure's been mounting because it's an obvious choice to everyone else, and a different obvious choice to Kim. Her conflict with the two jobs gets spelled out in this episode by the cranky old man, Mr. Acker. What you do shows people who you are. At the courthouse, Kim is a defendant of the downtrodden, helping people from being trampled by the wheels of justice. At Mesa Verde, she's a corporate shark mowing down anyone who gets in the way of her client padding their bottom line. And the good work doesn't outweigh the bad. It can't cover it up. Just like with Jimmy, there aren't second chances with a first impression. Once people see you for who they think you are, they can be sure you'll never change. Even when Kim opens up about her past (which tells a lot about the person she became) it has no effect on Acker. Like Jimmy, she's learning that honesty doesn't work. You only get the results you want by conning people because then they hear what they want to be told. I think Kim is most upset because she knew what mattered at the start of the day but allowed herself to be talked into the easier option. She told her boss that the associates could handle Mesa Verde and that she needed to be in court with her clients. He told her only she can handle Mesa Verde and that the associates can take care of the pro-bono cases. And she gave in. Then it turns out the Mesa Verde job was just yelling at an old man and accomplishing nothing, while one of her clients failed to show up to court because an associate only called one of his three contact numbers. Kim can't divide herself between the two jobs anymore, she can only do one well, she has to make a choice or she'll get ripped in half.
