“You don’t get it, do you, pretty boy?” Pharynx sneered, “The only thing that can keep a changeling alive is-”

“Love. Yes, I’m aware, general.” Blueblood said boredly, “I’m also aware that changelings possess a rather thin exoskeleton, and lack the proper circulatory system to survive long in the cold. Surely even your insect brain can understand this- it’s the soup, or nothing.”

“Well.” Pharynx’s mouth abruptly split into a smile, all sharp fangs and wicked mandibles. “I could always drain you, couldn’t I? I bet nobody in Canterlot’d complain if their precious ‘grand duke’ never turned back up.” He paused, savoring his partner’s cold glare. “Think about it, Blueballs. It’s been weeks since those bandits ambushed our caravan. Ain’t it funny we haven’t seen hide or hair of a search party since then?” Pharynx chuckled. “Can’t imagine they’re missin’ you too bad back hom-mmph!”

Blueblood had seized the opportunity to shove his spoon into the Pharynx's open mouth. “As I said, it’s soup or nothing, general.” He said firmly, levitating another spoonful, “Now shall you eat like a reasonable member of society, or shall I have to feed you like a foal?”

Pharynx gaped at him, eyes wide with fury and indignance. For a moment he bristled, perhaps considering violent retribution- then seemed to think better of it. He slumped down in a sulk, face flushing green. “....I can feed myself just fine, jackass.”

“Good lad.”

when coloring illustrations like this- a full environment with full shading- do you use the same base colors every time? personally when drawing, (especially if its an environmental piece) i choose the base colors of my characters with respect of the environment's colors. basically i said "no color picking my reference sheets" i don't think your coloring/shading looks bad or anything (i really love the reflective lighting in the shadows)- its just something i figured i'd ask/suggest. :)

Obliterated? More like...✨enhanced✨. The background is so pretty!! Such warm colors. I really love this rougher, adventurer side to Blueblood! And how indignant Pharynx is, it's just plain cute. It's like those cliched Indiana Jones-esque adventure-romance films except way more fun cuz it's not stomping on women to make the hero look cooler lol Can't wait to see more of these two! (I'm jumping the gun but good golly they'd make some CUTE babies)

Pharynx: A changeling can't survive without love, idiot Bluebood: Yes. We've been alone in the tundra for weeks. Do I have to spell out the gay context or would you like me to write it into a YA novel for easier consumption? Alternatively: Pharynx: Blueballs. We're lost. Bluebood, indignantly: We are *not* lost, my cutiemark is a *compass* - Pharynx: What better way for the universe to warn everyone around you that you still use that foal's trick for determining right from left?

Curio Blue

As someone who lives in the frozen north let me just say - the ambience, the lighting, the shading, is all SO GOOD and it's ACCURATE AF! It really does look that way during the waxing and waning hours during wintertime, you did such a good job with this!

I feel like "obliterated" might have been a poor word choice. I'm not unhappy with the end colors, this is simply my process. I use a base color layer to provide just that, a base. Using layers above the base, I introduce light and shadow, fiddling around til I find the exact sort of atmosphere I'm looking for. This drawing was originally gonna be a lot less purple and a lot more blue, full of drab, monochromatic blues and greys to hint at a gathering snowstorm. I then changed my mind, opting for a palette that showed the characters instead being threatened with the approach of nightfall. Making the change was easy, since I could just toss out the snowstorm layer and return to my base layer. I hope I'm explaining this okay. I'm aware that the colors of a character will change based on the way their environment is lit. My base layer gets modified to reflect that. This is what the characters flat color palette looks like, when I first adjusted their colors: https://sta.sh/026xm7qzshpr

yep this is fantastic and i WILL find a place to cram it into the story proper
