Heyo, I’m thinking of exploring Bruce’s past (and also by proxy the pasts of Pandora, Moondancer, and Cupcake). Back when he was a brute and a bully. I figure he led a pack of other colts that enjoyed harassing the meek and vulnerable for laughs. I need to make one or two bully characters for Bruce to hang out with. If you have any ideas, I’d love to hear em! The characters can be nextgens of canon show ponies or just random OCs. I’d like them to be male, and maybe about 16 years old each (or older, they may have been held back a grade or two).  I’d like them to be mean and jerkass-y and tough, but also compelling, not boring, like the stereotypical “gimme ur lunch money” bullies we see in media. I’d have based em off the bullies I knew growing up, but mine were all girls that only made the occasional catty remark that I was spacing out too much to notice.

so. Bully ideas! Suggest away!

EDIT: I‘d like to add that I’d prefer if the bullies’ backstories weren’t too similar to Bruce (who bullies because of neglectful/abusive parents and deep-seeded insecurities). I’d also want it to be apparent that Bruce, Bully 1, and Bully 2 are actually friends, as in they do actually like each other and act as surrogate family to one another, cruel and malicious though they are to others.

I have a few ideas here; A colt who is with them to avoid being bullied himself? Like he can be REALLY nasty but is scared of people finding out he likes other things? I imagine him having a scruffy mane and doing whatever the other bullies do to fit in, like if they tease little foals he will too. Etc Or maybe a big boi who is ruthless and just enjoys making the little colts and fillies pee themselves in fear, whereas at home his family is abusive and he is the one who gets abused by older siblings (his older sisters) he tends to be a bad influence to others around him and gets innocent ponies caught up in his "pranks" which tend to get abit dangerous (maybe setting Fluttershy's animal sanctuary on fire wasn't the best idea) A third one could be a shorter chubby colt who is abit twitchy, he seems to only make small snarky remarks but behind the scenes creates some pretty nasty rumours about everyone, he can be abit weird and crazy at times, (DO NOT CALL HIM SMALL. If he hears you call him small or make any remarks on his size he will make it his mission to ruin your life.)

In middle school, this handsome kid who was older than me hung out with my brother. He had gorgeous shoulder-length hair and mysterious blue eyes. His cheekbones and jaw were statuesque. One day, when he was making fun of my inability to cuss, he all of the sudden offered to kiss me. I hadn't had my first kiss yet, so I put on a brave face and insisted that he'd be lucky to kiss me, but I didn't want to kiss such an ugly personality. He called me a "fag," then proceeded to insist that he would have me anywhere, and I'd see fireworks. He even jumped on someone's open back porch couch and made out with the air, tongue and hands pantomiming to show me "what could be yours." I ran home and brushed him off as nasty. After we graduated high school, I learned that he had come out of the closet and hung out with my brother because he'd had a crush on him. The man never apologized for bullying me for years, but said that we "had good times as neighbors growing up."

Hm... maybe Hoops could have a son? you know, the yellow-orange pegasus with his hair obscuring his eyes? the one who kept calling Rainbow 'Crash', and Fluttershy 'Klutzershy'? Perhaps his son feels neglected, with his dad always pulling some desperate stunt to make money and/or notoriety. Heck, maybe Hoops didn't want a child at all, and straight up ignores his son to focus on his own selfish desires. His son could gravitate toward Bruce because he feels like Bruce appreciates his strength and loyalty. It's not perfect, but it's the closest thing to a loving family that Hoops' son has.

I like those ideas! Especially the colt who acts tough and hangs out with the 'bad' boys because he's afraid of being bullied himself. I've seen that happen a few times in my life.

I love your idea! It works so well! Alot of bullies become bullies because of family issues and I would not doubt hoops being a dick of a father

Jeez, people who use others for their gain suck. I've had people do that sort of thing to me, it would always be the "cool group" they would yell to me that their friend liked me but their friend would pretend to vomit and say "ew why would I like that hippo?" Etc. That's one of the reasons I am sus when someone says they like me. It's sad what bullies can do to you in the long run

I don’t really have notes on particular characters, but more so on how Bruce possibly interacts with them. For one thing I think it’d make sense for them both possibly be earth ponies, and even the sons of fellow fisher ponies, or something similar in background to Bruce (poor, hard working families, not extremely friendly to ponies outside their kind or living in ways that their families are against). Again, as to why these particular colts are bullies themselves I’ll think about, but I don’t necessarily believe they’ve been abused to the degree Bruce has been, but definitely feel that same pressure to be tough and growing up under some toxic influences. They pack up with Bruce after he proves that despite his size he can throw a wallop of a punch. For a while I think Bruce is pretty happy. He has friends that look up to him and think he’s a badass and are always eager to join in Bruce’s taunting and mean pranks. He feels like he’s finally doing something right and has a little place to call his own. Bruce won’t realize it for many years, but this is really more of an illusion of friendship rather then the real thing. They very much follow a “survival of the fittest” mindset and Bruce is yet again in a situation where he can’t be soft or weak or express what he’s really thinking. I like to think as they get older and more bold Bruce finds himself actually under even more pressure to be aggressive and mean and tough to keep himself on top and impress his gang...I think at this point Bruce is subconsciously very lonely and miserable. Maybe he doesn’t feel like saying something cruel to that little mare with the bad new haircut (didn’t her grandmum just die?), or throwing firecrackers in the water to see the fish explode out of it (not only would Cutthroat bellow about the waste, but they might just be fish but Bruce still hates watching them die like that. It makes him feel sick) or various other instances where Bruce would have once eager joined in (hell he would have started it himself) but nowadays he doesn’t get that same feeling he used to (to his confusion and frustration) and his friends start to notice and some mocking about Bruce getting soft starts. Maybe that dangerous prank gone wrong that sent Bruce to juvy was a result of him desperately overcompensating to every pony else (and himself) that he’s still the baddest colt in school. Only it goes horribly wrong in many ways, and one result is that his friends no longer want to hang out with him. Guess even bullies have a line, who knew? (Or more likely they were scared of being thrown in juvy too and abandoned ship). Bruce is now an outcast everywhere and bitterly lonely.....luckily, a certain teacher is always looking out for him...and that’s my brainstorm so far :) But I’ll definitely think about the actual colts themselves. My first instinct is to base them on bullies from my school, buuuuut the fact that many of them today are still toxic, ignorant, xenophobic idiots, I don’t think they’d make very good characters XD

Buttermaster

Coco Pommel is a working single mom. She has two sons, older (bully) and younger. She isn’t home a lot, and so her elder son is charged with babysitting and housework duties most of the time. She also goes away on trips to go to different fashion shows/meet clients. Elder son loves his younger brother and mom, but is bitter about having to shoulder all this responsibility at a young age. Plus, when he confronts her with his feelings, she will often burst into tears (Oh I’m so sorry! I’m so terrible! I work so hard for you boys, but I’m the worst mother ever, aren’t I?). This unintentionally guilts the elder son into being quiet (though he’s super annoyed with her behavior). Why is his mom so sensitive?! I imagine he gravitates towards Bruce’s gang to feel control over a situation. He feels like he doesn’t have a say in his life/free time, so he enjoys the feeling of making someone else react poorly. His favorite targets are shy, soft ponies (like his mom). He likes making mean comments to get them to feel small, and doesn't get physical too often unless a fight breaks out and he's help the group! However, he’s still kind of a mother hen. He takes care of his bro (and often drags him along on hangouts, kind of a bad influence lol), and his bros. Maybe one of the other washout’s (the purple one) kids? His mom faces unemployment after the washouts are disbanded (and she falls out with lightning dust, thus he can’t see his friend Zipperflash anymore). His mom constantly gets jobs, but due to her aggressive nature, she loses them. She often will rant to her kid about how dumb this namby pamby, friendship world is, and he kind of internalizes that. He admires the ‘toughness’ of Bruce and his gang, and feels if others are weak, then he should assert his strength over them. He’s quick to get physical and loves a good fight. He loves his mom a lot and just wants her to be happy and get a good job. I imagine him and his mom are bros, and she is weirdly supportive of his behavior. He’s bent on restoring the washouts. Probably has a crush on bruce but would never ever tell. LATER when Bruce is with Stormy, he is SO MAD, when did Bruce get so soft? He hates Stormy! Stormy is so weak, and he's rainbow dash's son, who helped ruined the career his mom loved. He's also jealoussss.

Too bad Babs Seed didn't have a cantankerous, snarky cousin or brother who moved down to Ponyville, with a dense Brooklyn accent. I'd imagine he'd be a rich only child, or 6 or so years older than Babs. His parents and society idolize him, think Olga Pataki, but due to little to no parental discipline and boundaries he's learned the power of manipulation, as such children often act out in search of structure. This "Helgafies" Babs. I'd imagine he views people as assets or problems, and begins seeing Bruce as a socially lucrative piece of intelligent, strong arm candy. Gotta climb up the ladder quick in this hick town. However, after taking Bruce under his wing, guy Seed genuinely warms up to Bruce (maybe even clandestinely falls for him).

maybe a snips and twist next gen? i can see snips antagonizing personality mixed with twist’s timid nature could concoct a pretty self conscious (or overly confident?) colt of filly that would be keen to impress kiddie bruce and the clan.

Amber

I'm thinking a Derpy x Dumbell next gen who is also disabled like Derpy, and a jerk like Dumbell. Maybe not too intelligent.

Dragon Turtle

Oh dang, that would be like Richie from It if he decided to team up with the bullies. Having a pipsqeak would give variety to Bruce's crew, instead of JUST muscley tough guys. Lopoddity, I think Emersyn is on to something. Although I have no idea if Snips and Twist are together or not in your universe, but it's an interesting bully dynamic to have.

I’d like to see a non-pony, perhaps a Griffon? Or a young dragon? Any one of those who come from a long-standing culture of resenting nanny-pamby friendship. Maybe he’d see Bruce and Fisk as friends but would never be able to admit it, moreso only tolerating their presence but them being the only friends he has, and perhaps vice-versa. Maybe he has some kind of disability he was constantly bullied for, like a speech impediment, and so he returns that harassment tenfold onto others who are unashamed of their disabilities. I dunno, but I love Fisk! He’s got a great backstory and his motivations make total sense.
