Yeah, this show is fantastic! Sure some episodes/seasons are less good than others, but I can't recall an episode I'd say is *bad*, nor would I say there was a season I didn't enjoy. Usually shows decrease in quality as time goes on, but on this show, season 4 is my favorite, which I think speaks to how the quality stays high throughout. I'm with you on wondering why they didn't want to ingratiate the show into the larger canon (I don't recall whether there was a specific explanation), but at the same time I'm glad because I'd be afraid the show having to adhere closely to the movies' canon might put a wrench in the cohesiveness that the TV team put together. "Afterlife" and the Fitzsimmons "fight" were such good examples of this show pulling a fast one on the audience. Except in a positive way, not a gotcha for the sake of being a gotcha. It all makes sense once you know the context and makes for a fun rewatch.

Gonzales has the right "general idea", but his approach is an issue. He does want what is best for S.H.I.E.L.D and they should trust each other to stop threats but he is starting to become more like Hydra. His distrust of powered people is borderline racist. Again he is right that Skye's powers are dangerous but that does not give him the right to treat her like that. He wants all the information Coulson has in that box supposedly so they can trust him. We have some reveals of Mike and Jiaying this episode and I love how the writers play with expectations. Cal never said Jiaying was dead he said Whitehall butchered her and tossed her out into the woods. Jiayiing gift allowed her to live through that. Also something of note about Fitz. He tossed the box with one hand and caught it with his other with no problem showing he has completely healed physically.

I find that one of the biggest problems those Disney+ Marvel shows have is the way they are constrained by MCU canon AND also having to set up the next movie or Disney+ TV show.
