Ranger One on Minbar... Guess who that is. You know him. Corwin comes around, you'll see... Oh you HAVE seen! :D The "...hydroponic guy set a little space aside for..." Lieutenant Commander Laurel Takashima, who let Susan have it when she took over for Laurel. Probably a pain in the ass to uproot and transport it. Your initial reaction to the Vindrizi was as expected. Basically "Um, eww. No, no, no, no...." etc. This is such a "grey" episode. I was never all that fond of it, though I do understand the dilemma. The Vendrizi (speling? lol) are not taking people against their will, but it looks otherwise, and it does seem very sus. But Duncan, once free of the symbiont (NOT parasite - that's important!), tells Stephen that it's true that they all volunteered and they all are basically healed of the ills they had before, thus making a better life for themselves. Since a host can only accept a symbiont once, Duncan essentially sacrificed himself to assure Stephen that they were telling the truth. I also don't think the symbionts extend a normal lifespan, but maybe a little. When the host is due to pass away normally, most likely a new host comes forward. Yeah a lot of this is conjecture/theory, but it stems from what is illustrated in the episode. And it's possible the Vendrizi could come in very handy in, say, a thousand years. You'll understand after a certain S4 episode. Well, maybe...

I also wonder if - in a very subtle, offhand way - B5 (read: Joe) ripped off the symbiont idea from Deep Space Nine (since the producers of which were accused of ripping off Babylon 5 in the first place lol). In DS9, there is a race called Trill, some of whom host symbionts which are worm-like, and enhance the person. The concept here is somewhat different yes, since each Trill symbiont has a name which the host adopts as part of their own (Jadzia Dax, later Ezri Dax, main character), but there ARE similarities.
