I actually really like this episode. I really like the eerie tone, the twist and the performances - particularly of Bradley James as Arthur in this one. It’s a pretty dark story, and in some ways something a bit different to what Merlin usually deals with, and I like that. Also to be clear, the Druid attack happened while Arthur was still a Prince, under Uther’s orders - not when he was King! I don’t think he ever would have done that of his volition/ without Uther’s orders. It’s really really upsetting for sure, but I think it makes more sense in knowing that. It’s also nice that this episode tackled a number of different issues/plot points - Arthur as King, Arthur’s past, Gwen being gone, Elyan, Magic and the Druids etc. Also Merlin was especially funny to me in this episode. His “wrong side of the table” joke always gets me giggling!
