A great season but it only gets better!

Exciting finale. Season 1 is considered the weakest season and a lot of MCU fans could not make it past the slower beginning episodes to see the pay offs later in the season. But I am so glad you liked this season. Let's talk about the characters and their arcs. Coulson's arc ends with him being director and that is because all throughout this season coulson has been making decisions like Fury. When one of his team members was injured he did everything possible to save her which is a direct parallel to him and fury and the GH drug. He also learned the value of keeping secrets that fury is so famous for. May's arc involved being a parallel to ward which is why they had him and her fight in the finale. They both had were given orders but while May learned to reject fury's orders for coulson. Ward could not do that for Skye and struggled without orders. Skye arc is connected with Mike because in the beginning her bad actions were motivated by her trying to get to her family and any info on them. But she ignored what ward tells her in this finale showing how far she has come. Fitzsimmons arc is sad. Fitz throughout the season he has tried to be brave and be the hero to save Simmons but here he admits to her how scared he is and he admits his feelings. Throughout the season Simmons didn't think fitz was capable of being the big hero outside the lab but she says to fury that he was the hero fun fact Fitzsimmons were basically in the scenario from 1x19. You are alone in a deserted island with a box what's in that box and fitz said Simmons. He ended up in a box alone with Simmons.

An excellent finale to an enjoyable season with all our main cast having their moments to shine. The containment pod scenes with FitzSimmons has always been a favourite of mine and Fury turning up to pluck them from the water is the cherry on the cake. Elizabeth Henstridge has related a couple of stories of her meeting SLJ which you might enjoy...enough to say that they put her in a depressurisation tube for a reason! Looking forward to your reactions to season 2.

Show only goes up from here.

I think I’m with the general consensus in season one being the weakest of the show. But like you, I have always really enjoyed it! It introduces truly lovable and well realised characters and sets up so much in terms of plot for the rest of the show. I loved your reaction to this finale, it’s a very exciting and satisfying one. There’s lots of great stuff, although the standout scenes for me are the Fitzsimmon’s scenes in the pod. Such great writing, and such great acting from the both of them. So excited for you to start season 2. It just gets better and better!

Ian Fleming

The season one finale sets the stage, but not the tone, of what is to come in season two. 1x22 poses a lot of questions and season two provides answers to those questions. But those answers will only lead to bigger questions. Like everyone else here, I cannot wait for you to start season two. To quote another Whedon TV show: "Time's up. Rules change."

Ian Fleming

I wouldn't say that season one is "weak", I would say that it is conventional. For season one the writers gave the ABC network execs what they mandated - 22 episodes of a family-friendly action adventure show set in the MCU. From season two onward, things go batshit crazy.

Lyla

I totally agree! I only meant ‘weakest’ when comparing it with all the other seasons to come, not that it’s actually a ‘weak’ season of the show. I do enjoy season one a great deal, and I think it’s probably actually necessary to have a more conventional season before things go crazy, to fully set up characters and plot. And yes you’re right that the conventionality is likely not even down to the writers, but the studio.
