Funny how it goes from Sam and Cas should be looking into the whole mark thing but Dean catches grief for getting called to the 'emergency' that is Claire running out on the dude who essentially killed her father. Not saying Cas doesn't need his own story or goals outside of the boys but the last time he checked in with Dean was the tail end of Dean almost murdering his brother in episode 3. He spent like 5 minutes there before moving on to the angel hunting aka waste of time so someone should really call Crowley since he has been the most helpful on the mark and it's consequences.

The thing about John is, the damage he inflicted is implied to be much greater than anything that is blatantly stated in canon. Dean in particular--in being forced to be everything John and Sam both needed when he was just a child, he never gained true personhood of his own, which led to a lot of the self-esteem issues he continues to have--that's how I see it, anyway. Any time little Dean let loose and tried to act like the kid he actually was, John "looked at him different" (see episode Something Wicked). I never doubted for a minute John loved his boys--it's not a black and white issue, because people are complicated--but he sure did screw them over in the head, especially Dean. I don't think that kid ever felt like he was good enough in his father's eyes and we still see it playing out on screen even in these later seasons. The parallel between Claire's story and Dean's is also interesting. Claire was about to literally be sold from one skeevy guy to another for nefarious purposes. Meanwhile, Dean tells a story about his teenage self being literally drugged by a bunch of people older than himself, for what reason? We never find out, because John saved him. Then adult Dean snaps on the people who wanted to use Claire. Yikes, the subtext there.
