I also liked season 8 better than season 7. I think they really worked hard on making this an engaging season, just for the reason that David is missing in so many episodes. It pushed them. They made this season darker again, which gave it a certain back to the roots feel, with many horror-ish monster of the weeks on one side, and many mytharc episodes on the other side. Doggett was a good addition, and a breath of fresh air. And Scullys character really grew here, as the lead. A few weeks ago you said, that you miss the humour. It was indeed the most humour-lacking season in a while. But remember that the show started quite dark. Humor wasn't really on Chris Carters plan when he created the show. The first comical episode was Humbug in late season 2, written by Darin Morgan. It's part of The X Files DNA and I enjoy it. But if you want to go more back to the roots, you need to cut down the humor a bit. I think in this period of time they used The Lone Gunmen series to go full on the humour side of things, and cut it down on The X Files.
