As you make your way along the road, passing between an old apple tree and a freshly-sown potato field guarded by a single scarecrow, you hear a low laugh on the wind. As you slow to seek the source, you watch as seedlings begin to break through the soil, and, behind you, a hundred white flowers bloom on the tree by the road.

The laugh turns dark then, and you watch a shadow spread across the field. The crops begin to wither, their sackcloth sentry begins to unravel, and the apples growing on the tree behind you begin to fall, rotting before they can even touch the ground.

The laugh turns to a cackle as the scarecrow's straw-packed stomach begins to swell, until it splits down the middle, spilling rotting flesh onto the swiftly blackening soil.

This one proved a little more trouble than I expected, honestly - originally, it was meant to be a simple map of a road running through some farmland. But as I was working on it, I was struck by an idea I quite liked for an encounter, and I decided I wanted to set up phases for it.

The idea was that some malicious entity would cause the apple tree and the crops in the field to wither and die before the party's eyes - perhaps a curse on the farmer's land placed by someone they murdered in cold blood, or perhaps the result of a haunting that may manifest by possessing the scarecrow in the field?

I've provided WebP tiles for all the states of the tree, the crops, and the scarecrow, for anyone who would like to try to make full use of the variants on offer - I'm also still experimenting with Foundry VTT, and I'm hoping that when I'm ready to start releasing my maps as modules, I'll be able to rig this encounter to allow you to move through the phases with relative ease!

My maps are made with assets from Forgotten Adventures and AoA (bolstered with assets of my own making here and there), and they usually come with day/night, edited/unedited, and light/lightless variants, plus JPEGs, WebPs with transparent backgrounds, and UVTT (DD2VTT) files for Foundry VTT if the map features buildings or interiors.
