Now that optimization week is over, I have begun to implement the ragdoll system for the characters. This is a big change because every single movement will now be physically simulated for extra responsiveness and realism.

To start, this means that characters are internally still animated using the same old animations except during the physics step, the bones will be interpolated to a separate physics armature that mimics the original animation armature. Thus, the ragdoll is animated in it's own "local space" allowing me to flick the physics on/off. Like in this .gif:

Notice how the ragdoll maintains the same standing pose despite now being affected by physics. With this system we can take advantage of the physics and make some really good looking organic animations. The first thing I made was make a falling loop animation which plays whenever the loli is not touching the floor.

Then I made an animation that makes her curl up in an attempt to protect her body as she hits the floor:

Lastly I made a "get up" animation which makes her stand back up from a face down position. (Transition is choppy since I haven't finished smoothing it out yet)

Together al these new animations provide the loli with a new and very cool looking dynamic way to react to falling:

The logic driving this simply checks that the loli has stopped moving to ensure it is safe for her to get up. Because there are many ways that she can end up facing when she grinds to a halt, I plan to make a couple more types of animations of her getting up, namely; facing_up_to_stand and facing_side_to_stand. I think this physics system is turning out great because it really grounded her into the world. She flails her arms as she falls and her feet now step "on top" of small obstacles instead of just phasing through them. I think this is pretty exciting stuff and I plan to expand this a bit more before I get into the loli employment in week 3.

Stay tuned!

AAA games: Our games are packed with realistic npc animations. 400hrs of actor motion capture to. VivaDev: That's cool but do you have loli ragdoll physics? No? That's what I thought.

Something about her just falling face down flat on the floor is just objectively hilarious.
