After all this time, after all the waiting, after all the "get off your ass and make a Doom Eternal video, Civvie" it's finally here, and you can all bask in my uncontroversial and 100% correct takes on the newest Doom game.

No, but really - this game ended up being way more divisive than I thought. I expect vigorous debate in the comments section for the weeks and months to come. I don't know if id went too far with this one, however if another Doom game comes out following up on Doom Eternal, it will absolutely go too far.

Props to whoever recognizes the callback to the Bad Day L.A. video at the beginning.

Liertally just booted up DOOM64 when this went live. Plans diverted.

I'll be honest, I'm going to finish Eternal before I watch this. I'm really liking it now I've sunk considerable time into the game and learned what it wants me to do but those first couple of hours are a difficulty spike you could impale somebody on. Look forward to watching it when I finish Eternal.

Ooh boy I can’t wait to get mad at anyone who even slightly disagrees with me on this one.

Anonymous

Sucks couldn't get the game so I have to wait too watch this one.

MainelyLiving

Ed it because the doom guy : SPOILERS: IS ACTUSLLY RANDY PITCHFORD THE ENTIRE TIME?

gill

i feel like im the only person who likes it a great deal better than doom 2016, and i love that game

Sami Scott

very good video as always civvie, personally I love doom eternal more than 2016 but i can see where you are coming from

Sami Scott

also not to brag but im about finish the game on nightmare and this is my 3rd run so *whistles*

LuciferSam

For now I started the ARC complex level and for now I like Eternal more than 2016. Can't wait to finish the game, and see the video.

After getting through the first hour or so I absolutely loved it. The new art style seemed like what they would have gone with had they not had to play it a bit safer visually with 2016. The combat felt like me playing the shareware of Knee Deep in The Dead when I was 6 and filling in blanks of what was happening because 1993 graphics couldn't show it. I'll unreservedly defend Eternal all day.

I feel like Doom Eternal is a great sequel to Doom 2. But as a follow-up to Doom 2016, I think it is awful. Removing all the horror elements, most of the gore, and making sure everything was bright friendly and Disney-fied, was not the direction I would have gone. For crying out loud, they even added cartoon sound effects to it. like the popping cork sound, when you remove a demon's eye.

I haven't watched the video yet, but personally, I pre-ordered the game, and finished the campaign on Ultra-Violence after 20 hours or so. I had a blast the whole time and I felt like I was in my childhood again, having been hooked on a game after so long. I couldn't care less about the lower ammo count because it forced me to vary up my playstyle rather than just super shotgun my way to the finish line. And the platforming? It was fine really, nothing game-breakingly bad. In my book, Eternal is a proper sequel to DOOM 2016, and it is better in many ways.

I love this game, I think it's mostly brilliant, but also agree with all your points and slightly prefer 2016.

Doom 3 had better atmosphere than the Doom 2016 and 2020, but I understand some later levels drag on and thus become boring. The jumping in 2020 is really annoying but you get used to it. While the maps are more artsy than in 2016, you pretty much don't have enough time to look at them. I don't like the closed arena concept at all. Also all those hidden walls keeping you from jumping in interesting places, but there is really not point to that, because all is linear pretty much, sigh. It is a good successor, but I expected more. I agree it's almost overdone and it will be difficult to create a worthy successor if they keep this game play style. BTW, I played Doom 2016 in UV and after 2/3 of the game, when you exited the monorail, I switched to "I’m Too Young to Die", because I was getting stressed. I play just for enjoyment. I knew that Eternal Doom is more difficult and tested it in "I’m Too Young to Die". The first levels were already difficult and I have never regretted playing it until the end. It was not totally easy mind you, but I managed to relax a lot. The last fights of Doom Eternal are challenging event in the easiest skill. Personally I still favor Doom 3 because of it's style/no arenas. If they just would have included the Doom 3 Alpha Bird Demon in any of their recent Dooms it would have been awesome.

It has its flaws, such as being very punishing at the beginning as said in the video, and the platforming takes away at times, and the purple goo and swimming sections can fuck straight off. That being said, the combat is absolutely perfect. A finely polished ballet of death and destruction. It somehow walks a very very fine line between being very punishing and imo quite fair. I never had a death that I wasn't able to know what I was doing wrong. I've heard it compared to Dark Souls FPS and that fits pretty well for me. Also because the hardest part is unlearning habits that we all got from Doom 2016.

nova++

The thing I'm noticing about Eternal is there's a pretty linear relationship between how much you enjoy the game and how much your personal playstyle agrees with the one the designers *enthusiastically encourage.* I'm middle-of-the-road for it. 18 hours in and I was enjoying myself but still fumbling and hitting the wrong equipment button a fair bit. And forgetting to use the chainsaw. I got a kind of tetris effect thing for a while where I kept thinking I heard the low ammo or low health sound. It haunts me. It's not *bad* it's just so... weird. That's the central core of what all the feelings about it orbit around - it's just such a goddamn strange game.

Planescaped

I was hyped for the game... but I learned long ago NEVER pre-order anything. After it came out I was glad I didn't. There did seem to be something 'off' about the new Doom. I already wasn't a big fan of the chainsaw or glory kills from 2016 Doom... and that they're even more integral to the game really kills the last of my interest. I might pick it up for 20$ someday, but everything I have seen it really does look like 1 step forward 2 steps back...

Brian Rich

Wall climbing or die scenarios, portals, stupid heaven/hell/midgard world building... it's like they took all the stupid shit I hated from the "Darksiders" franchise and said "Whoah! That's metal, let's put it in yo!" I both love and hate this game. It's not as good as "Doom (2016)", but still good.... and bad... and why does it fucking make me feel this way?? I'm sure I'll just love it forever if I play it enough like when you watch "MST3K'.

Mario_bland

It's so crazy how much harder the game is if you don't get persision shot + grenade laucher first

Boy, when I saw your synopsis, I was slightly worried this game wasn't as good as everyone had been making it out to be. It really does look fantastic and I do plan on getting it eventually, but I *really* feel 2016 benefited from a silent and slightly less "famous superhero persona" protagonist. It felt a lot cooler.

TheKindlyOnes

havent actually gotten to play, one of the "essential workers" who is stuck braving the plague. But this has got me interested and prepared me a bit for it. Only issue i can think of is i kinda miss the old glory kills, the blade thing is kinda cool, but i liked how he would just grab things and mangle them horribly with his bare hands. Now its chopchop done.

LaserfaceJones

I bought every bit of cringy fanservice this game sold. I'm also pretty certain the only direction the game can go is Eldritch Horror-town, and considering VEGA calls your teleporter thing on your ship a Slipgate, I think Doomguy and "Ranger" are going to cross paths.

Anonymous

I fully expected you to mention the Into Sandy's City remake, Civvie. Glad you used it at the end though.

Aaron Thomas

I agree, the whole mystery surrounding the character was great and having players try to piece together the story was an awesome move by ID. Meanwhile of course the whole point is to endlessly mangle and slaughter everything that moves. However, I think the whole "Doom guy Superhero" thing was way out of the water and took alot away from the game. Well no shit the Doomguy is an unstoppable hormone and adrenaline induced killing machine, but did we really need the news crap and the citadel to drive that home? In regards to the gameplay, I just finished it on Ultra and holy hell what a rush. Personally I have no issue with the limited ammo thing, when you get the combat flow down you don't even notice it that much and it's honestly not an issue. Combat is still fluid and way faster than 2016. I don't know how many times after a fight I had to stop, laugh, and go Holy shit that was awesome. Overall still a top notch game, I wish they would have kept the story more ubiquitous (and tone it down because where the hell did it go?) and out of the way like in 2016; but I still think its interesting and fun. 9 Trashcan Randys' out of 10 Romero smiles... and maybe 3 or 4 guitar solos.

The one MAJOR issue I feel drags shit just a bit, the fact that the devs *necessitate* the use of their newly introduced mechanics by intentionally gimping you for their sake. Chainsaw being a perfect example of this, the ammo count being made annoyingly low in order to *necessitate* you using the chainsaw. As a result, the chainsaw ends up being a lot less fun than it was in the original since its use becomes less of a novelty and much more of an absolute necessity.

If Doom 1-2 are the original evil dead films, then Eternal is absolutely the Ash vs Evil Dead of the franchise. Bring to modern speeds, make the unexpected hero into a prophesized god-warrior whose sole destiny is to kill all the evil, and anyone who didn't believe it before or now will absolutely believe it soon enough, not that the Slayer even cares. Honestly I don't mind all of that, doom was founded on obsidian pillars of camp and violence, these new ID devs just took that and rolled with it. As for the crash bandicoot comparison, I'd only say that were true if the game was a dick and killed you for failing those. All in all doom eternal is a must but for fans of first person shooters, adrenaline junkies, coke fiends, and anyone with lots of pent-up anger who can also type at least 50 wpm cause that's how fast your fingers gotta dance on the GD keyboard on any difficulty above Too Young To Die.

Glad I'm not the only person who thought the voice acting was bad. Game still rips ass though, can't wait for the DLC

Corhellion

AWESOME...Hold on...wtf is that? @24:19, looks like while you were dashing sideways into that closed door, map culling/occlusion kicked in and ninja vanished half the level temporarily. Other than that, Awesome.

This game makes my brain melt, and my dick hard. Its dickish to the point of frustration, yet just so tight and satisfying to conquer. If Doom 2016 is the reboot of Doom 1993, then Eternal is slightly Plutonia in terms of dickishness and adrenalin.

Anonymous

Oh my god, THANK YOU. I haven't watched the video yet, but the title alone makes me feel vindicated. I liked the game well enough, but there were a LOT of design decisions that I didn't like. The heavier emphasis on platforming sucked (ESPECIALLY IN THE LATER LEVELS), the extremely limited ammo count even with max upgrades was very annoying, and some of the new enemies were very tedious and boring to fight (Who in their right mind came up with Marauders, for instance?). I'm curious to know if your thoughts align with mine.

Great video! I'll pick up Eternal eventually but I haven't managed to finish 2016 yet. I have ordered a Doom Slayer rubber duck however, just because it exists and my infant son loves ducks and his favorite bedtime tune is BFG Division.

John Laws

This game was a mixed bag for me TBH. Definitely improvements on the weaponry, but the ammo restriction was a bit absurd. They sound punchy af though, and the Plasma Gun and Chaingun are vastly improved. Also each map is basically a different connect-the-dots puzzle; the dots being the gantlet arenas of insanity, and the lines being the parkour pitfalls. Good game overall, but damn. I had to take regular breaks because it was so over the top. And the Marauder can just eat a dick.

Tony Toon

This review is such a perfect match for my own experience. It’s like wrote it by watching my own play through.

Law of Fives

This video aside, I wanted to say I disagree with you labeling a lot of your older content "old and crap". Your Land of the Dead video was one of the ones that really got me hooked. The entire description of the farmer's house at the beginning and the theorizing about the nature of the place was brilliant. And one of my favorite lines from any of your videos: "Okay, we're jumping to 'kill the strangers'. I'm pretty sure that's what Mr. Rogers taught us."

Anonymous

The "old and crap" is refering to the audio mixing. In the dark days of yesteryear civvie wasnt to good at it. i.e. the gamesound being 200% louder and him bearly understandable. still totaly watchable.

Anonymous

Your review is 100% spot on, Civvie. The game definitely starts out a lot rougher than it finishes, but once everything slides into place... oh, it's so great. I still need to see how Doomguy went from banished by Hayden to ultra-cool space station, though. I know that in Doom, story is second place, but starting in medias res like this was too much of a narrative jump.

Anonymous

The Icon of Sin fight was horrible.

Anonymous

Next step: Doom VR. Btw, are you going to do Alyx, Civvie?

QuetzaDrake

Oh, shit, haha, I would have never gotten the beginning was a reference to the end of the Bad Day LA video if you hadn't pointed it out, I assumed you were gargling to get the taste of Capstone out of your mouth.

John Laws

That's what I wanna know. How did Doomguy inherit his floating orbital fortress in the first place? And how did Hayden get rekt between games?

Anonymous

It was/is a nice enough game to play though, for me the whole ammo issue was very annoying and I found one the second play though that playing whit unlimited ammo made the game a lot lot more fun. I do how ever wish they would have added a "classic" mode or something removing all the glory kill stuff and just dumped enough ammo and health in the maps to play it like any other doom except 2016 but that might be added whit mods on the long run.

Anonymous

Once you max out micro-missiles the game becomes a less abusive relationship. FUCK THE MARAUDER!!! Thank the almighty id they only make you fight 1 at a damn time!

Anonymous

Something something Civvie sucks at Doom Eternal I managed to 100% on UV but the Marauder took literally all of my extra lives

Anonymous

I can not stress this enough but thank you for doing what you do

Zubaz

Been watching your vids for a while now. And while they’re rare... they are always getting me hyped up when they finally do drop. Never knew you had a patreon. You deserve every dollar man. Also are you gonna cover Daikatana someday. I think I loved it as a kid... but I might be super wrong

Robert Taylor

Love your work, keep it up, do I get to be on the credits sequence now? Cool - please add my name as TroleMaster420 please PS Pro Okuplok Slaughter Map when?

civvie11

I can do that. Your name will show up in the video after the one that goes up today.

Deadman Prime

Took me some time to get around to it, but I finally watched this. And I did have a couple of big gripes with Eternal from my experience. I found that it's more arena based than usual. DOOM 2016 did have some of that, but Eternal made the start and stop nature of the gameplay progression much more obvious than before. Once I settled into the loop, I had a ton of fun but the constant lock-ins bother me when I think about them too long. Gripe aside, excellent campaign. Meanwhile, Battlemode is nice but where's my Deathmatch? Bethesda's excuse is terrible considering the mode's history.
