Hello friends,

I've received a request for my tab and chord sheet for Doc Watson's rendition of "Summertime." Because I recommend that every aspiring soloist learn Merle Watson's classic licks, I decided to share these resources with the group. Enjoy!

Doc Watson "Summertime" Intro Guitar Solo Lesson

Get early access to the TABS, exclusive tutorials and other awesome supporter perks at http://www.patreon.com/swiftlessons Tab for this lesson: https://www.patreon.com/posts/doc-watson-intro-6503850 Pick up some of the late Merle Watson's brilliant guitar licks in my newest guitar tutorial. In this lesson I break down the intro guitar solo to Doc Watson's version of "Summertime" by George Gershwin. These licks are drawn from the blues scale in the key of Em, specifically in the A rooted position. Each phrase is very smooth, simple and loaded with rest. The moody vibrato and relaxed approach leaves the listener captivated, yet anxious for speed, which Merle delivers in the form of snappy, yet tasteful chromatic lines. Nice one Rob! Doc is my hero. Could you consider breaking down Deep River Blues at some stage?

Love this song. As a beginner, your lessons are helping me learn to play the guitar with your cIear explanations and close ups. Thank you and keep up the good work! btw your dogs are cute.

Thanks for Summertime. I love Gershwin. While you're considering the old standards, how about a beginners video on Come Porter's Anything Goes?

swiftlessons

Hey Bob, thats a great tune, thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. I'll consider putting something together when things slow down in the fall, as it's pretty complex.

Rob, Do you have a table that describes the tab notation you use in all your songs?

Just joined after seeing your awesome lesson on Summertime. But I can’t download the Tab to my iPad. Can you help? Thx!

Hey David, looks like I’ll need to do some maintenance on this post. I’ll whip up an upgraded tab tonight and message you when it’s done. Sorry for the issue, sometimes Patreon changes it’s system and the links break.

Thanks Rob. You did such a great job with the video. I think I’ll learn more between the two (video and tab). I appreciate your response. Best,

Hey David, I've created a print quality tab for the solo. I still need to include chords to each measure, so I'll wait to upload the PDF until those details are added. I've posted a screen shot of my work above. Check back tomorrow for a downloadable version.

Hi Rob, can't seem to download the solo hand written tab, is it still available? Thanks

Great post, Rob! The link to the tab is broken. Please advise?

swiftlessons

Hey Lei, thanks for the heads up, I deleted those outdated links. The resources are still attached at the bottom of the post.

New member as of today! Really like this version. I notice in your youtube lesson that you show the chord progression of G to Em to Am7 and then go to a C chord or optionally C/G then Em. The tab I downloaded, here has G to Em to Am7 to B7 to Em. Both work I like the progression on your youtube lesson better. - just wondering if you have your tab versions posted somewhere other than where I'm downloading from. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Hi Rob, have you posted any solo tablature for this besides the intro? I'd love to throw another solo in the middle of the song! Thanks, Steve
