Hello friends,

And welcome to another lead guitar tutorial. In today’s session I’ll be showing you some of my favorite Memphis soul style licks over a grooving 1.2.4.5 progression in C major. We’ll begin by learning the rhythm section, and a few applicable scale positions, before adding these smooth, melodic phrases to your repertoire. Let’s get started!

Section #1: The 1.2.4.5 Progression

Here’s a common soul style progression that you can use in your own original work.

Section #2: Major Pentatonic Scale – G & E Positions

To jam over this soul 1.2.4.5 progression, I will primarily be using the major pentatonic scale in C major, while also targeting specific notes inside of the chords mentioned above.

Section #3: A Memphis Soul Style Solo

Now that you’ve mastered the rhythm chord progression, and a few must know scales, let’s tackle some bluesy phrases. Practice each lick with slow, patient repetition before rehearsing with the provided backing track. Have fun!

Rob, what device or interface are you using to record the chord loops with? Thanks Russ

swiftlessons

Hey Russ, I recorded that backing track using a presonus firestudio interface going into Logic Pro. I performed the progression on drums, bass, guitar and organ twice through and created a loop by copy and pasting the recorded clip.

Hey David, thanks. I plan to produce some beginner to advanced soloing courses. Stay tuned!

This lesson is loaded with so much to get your head around. I'll have to listen to it over and over. More beginner licks will be greatly appreciated too. The more the merrier.

Love this Rob! Thanks you!

Wow! I actually just started working on this and am focusing on getting the phrasing and nuance. If you have any hot tips on vibrato, I’d love to know about them. By the way, I meant, “Thank you”, not “Thanks, you!”

Oh, embracing the caged system changes everything. Memorizing the chord positions and scales has given me a lot of confidence when exploring the fretboard, makes it much harder to get “lost.”

This is great Rob. I would love to have a backing track to this. What would you recommend for how to obtain (or create) a nice backing track for this? Thanks.

Wonderful lesson Rob. Thanks! Do you know of song in the Memphis Soul style that this chord progression would fit? If not, maybe you ought to write one!

Fantastic lesson Rob, really cool stuff! Thanks a lot! It's 9/10 for me! It would have been 10/10 with the backing track ;-)
