For anyone who doesn't know what a kappa is—also known as kawatarō (which is where the name Kawamatsu comes from)—it's an intelligent, reptile-like "God of water" in Japanese folklore. They can be depicted as being mischievous tricksters, even polite, and are said to have taught the Japanese how to set broken bones. But they're more often shown to be outright malevolent demons, drowning unsuspecting people and animals, kidnapping kids, having their way with women, and at times disembowling and eating people. Even today, you'll sometimes find signs by bodies of water in Japan warning people about kappas.
