Btw, Jim and Karen have been dating for a few weeks by this point. You have to remember this is meant to be a documentary about their work lives. You won't necessarily see every aspect of their romantic lives if it has nothing to do with work (meaning just because you didn't see a date, doesn't mean they didn't go on one, or several). Also the last time Jim physically saw Pam, he was admitting he loved her. He's aware she's no longer with Roy, and if you didn't notice, she subtly tried to ask him out in the breakroom. That's why Jim had to tell her that he was seeing Karen, because Jim saying he was busy "settling in" to lowkey reject her made it awkward.

It's better to clear the air than to keep someone in the dark and have them do something stupid. Jim sensed the weirdness between him and Pam and just wanted to let her know what's going on so she doesn't think there's a chance when there isn't one. Plus even if they didn't show when Jim and Karen started going out it was obvious from the way they were acting that they were something.

yall missed the part when Martin and Jim walked in and Michael said to Jim "we don't want your kind here" in front of Martin, I was like ayoo out of all the phrases to say then to follow up with "let me show you where the slaves worked" took me out lmao (ik y'all got the second part but the first part was what I was emphasizing)
