Just FYI - a lot of details in this show is covered in Dialogue. So you really gotta listen to what they're saying sometimes. Its obvious yall missed a few things since yall were confused at parts lol. If you ever rewatch this show, youll catch lots of little things you probably missed before. Its similar to Attack on Titan in that sense

The japanese are not "his people" per say, he is a true blood brittanian, a prince who was in line for the throne. The brittanians are technically his people. but he sees the wrongs, the horrible things brittania does and he hates that which is why he is on the side of the japanese people and seeks justice not just for them but ppl as a whole. He insulted and abandoned the resistance because they took innocent brittanians hostage and he said he does not believe in harming innocent people but the millitary, the corrupt leaders etc, the system n the creators. he doesnt believe in terrorism
