“The way of bushido is not thru life, but thru death.” His friend knew in one look right before he was going to die that Toranaga was not done. The next two chapters are great storytelling.

After re-watching this episode a few times, I think that the priest seeing his plot of land next to the teahouse was the moment he realized that Toranaga had duped him into helping his cause. Like yes, Toranaga gave you land, but in a way it was a slap in the face and was only done to ensure you would serve him unknowingly with the message of surrender to Osaka.
