Okay. I’m interrupting watching episode 2x12 to make a comment I’ve been meaning to make about Felicity’s father. I think he’s the only poorly-drawn character on the show. No way is a man who pretty clearly graduated from a major 4 year university and medical school so clueless about university life. At the beginning of the first season it was his dream for Felicity to go to Stanford, but his vision included her living at home? Give me a break! Stanford as far as I know is not at all that kind of university. It’s residential, no? And he always acts shocked at all the noise and chaos of the dorms, as if he’s totally unfamiliar with that. Now here he’s shocked that Felicity got in trouble for being drunk. Granted, they make a decent case that their violation was actually pretty serious. But the impulses that led them to it were completely normal for college students going through rough times and disappointments. I guess him being so clueless about so many things can be part of his character and why he’s in this predicament. But it seems more like bad writing to me ... like he NEEDS to be constantly shocked and scandalized because it’s necessary for the plot, rather than being a natural part of who this type of man would ordinarily be. End of rant!

The hints at problems with Felicity’s parents go all the way back to the Pilot episode, when her mother took such offense at Felicity being happy not to have weekly dinners with her anymore. And then when she explained that she loved those dinners essentially because they didn’t involve Felicity’s father. So now we know that Felicity’s relationship with her parents, and almost her whole identity, has until now been shaped by trying to keep her parents happy and together. And her parents were probably not an ideal match because they got married BECAUSE of getting pregnant with Felicity. I really admire how all of this fits into Felicity’s ongoing story and character development.
