The MCU didn't truly become iconic until the Russos took over the main creative thrust of it, but hol-ee sheet did it need Joss Whedon to set the tone the way he did. Simply legendary flick. Not complicated as a movie, almost prosaic in its plot design, but that can be enough. Feige, like Pope Benedict XI, asked a master for a work of art. Joss Whedon, like Giotto drew a geometrically perfect circle freehand, made this movie. The simplest thing done masterfully is still high art. EDIT: What Coulson was saying was "this was never gonna work if they didn't have something to *avenge*" That moment stung back when it seemed like it would stick. Granted, some moments hit differently after you've seen 22 of these things, too.
