i finally caught up with you for Buffy. A rare gem episode in one of the more shaky seasons of Buffy. (season 6 was my favourite) All the Spike memories were just golden. Great acting by James. The emotions on his face during the final scenes...

I have the theory of how when a human is turned into a vampire, parts of their true human self carries over. The stronger the human, the stronger their personality carries, maybe? Spike's mum was very sick, likely dying when he turned her. Perhaps her spirit was too weak for that love and humanity to pass over to her demon self, and so the demon was much stronger than whatever humanity remained in her. Whereas from the first time we met Spike he has always loved and cared. When Angel became a vampire he killed his whole family and then the whole village. Spike wanted to save his mother, and make her well again. Two very different vampires.
