Okay, so you brought it up and I was waiting for you to meet Max before mentioning this, so I hope no one considers this a spoiler! But I did say during episode two that something occured to me while watching your reaction and I'm going to mention it now. So basically, the guy that went on a business trip and said he would get back to Lorelai when he got back never shows up again. I've never paid it much mind, but this time I wondered if maybe they couldn't get the actor again for whatever reason, and so replaced the character with Max. They fit a similar type, that being people that could impact Rory's life at Chilton (Max being a teacher, this guy being a "Chilton Dad"), so I think that might be what happened. I tried to google it and find out for sure but couldn't find any information on it so it's just speculation on my end, but seems likely given how they made a point of him saying he'd "be back", yet he never is. And then suddenly we get Max who has a similar situation re: Rory. Again, hope people aren't mad about me saying that. I don't think it's really a spoiler though. Eek, sorry if people get mad! -.- I was going to wait longer before I mentioned it but then Van mentioned the guy in her end notes and I figured now would be okay.

Here's another show that does wonderful things with secondary characters, and very efficiently. We basically don't need any further character development to understand Babette and Maury going forward. They are an eccentric, loving couple. And Babette in particular is very sympathetic ... obviously kind of a misfit who could easily have been a weird and lonely "old maid," but found her soul mate in Maury. Cinnamon's wake also quickly establishes that Stars Hollow is a loving, supportive community, to an almost comical degree.
