New here? Check out the Where to Start page

Hi Everyone,

Before I send you off on the next community challenge, I wanted to give you a little bit of encouragement. This is it:

The things I'm posting here - lessons, livestreams, community challenges - are designed to digested at your own pace. On my patreon, there is no "falling behind" or "failing to catch up." I am trying to accommodate a wide audience, so some folks might be able to work through the material at a good pace and others might take a while. Some people were already familiar with guitar and theory when they arrived and some of you are learning everything from the ground up. You paces are all going to be unique to you. This is normal, this is healthy, this is good.

The more time you spend getting comfortable and familiar with the concepts that interest you, the easier it will be to understand and deal with the next concept that comes up. You got this. You can do it. Also, I'll remind you again that you're welcome to check out Scott's Recommended Lesson Plan if you want to get a sense of what videos to watch in what order.

OK! Now for the challenge!

For this challenge, you're going to start by playing a consistent beat with your picking-hand's thumb on the low E string. Then, while you're doing that, try playing an E minor or major pentatonic scale, or part of one.

If you've never tried this before, it can be difficult, but once you get a hold of the concept it can be quite fun. If it's really difficult, first plan the scale or scale fragment to play, practice it a bit without the bassline, then try to incorporate the bassline. This one is a little more challenging than usual, but give it a shot!

Those of you who feel like you're getting the hang of it, try writing a little melody instead of playing a scale.

For those of you feeling really adventurous, try making a melody using on and off beats.

Post your noodling on the community forum

Either way, just have fun and enjoy experimenting with open E constant bass note grooves
