Can’t wait to see your other reactions to Season 4 guys

Julien

This episode is so underrated in my opinion. There is three dynamics at play here, Commander Hange with the people of Paradis, Mikasa with Louise and Gabi with Kaya, all remembering one moment/person from their pasts. Hange is surrounded by the press over information that has been leaked by Floch's group about Eren’s imprisonment. We see the return of Flegel and the journalists from Season 3. They trusted Hange since she opened their eyes to the truth suppressed by the former regime. They are now demanding accountability and answers, which she hides from them. Hange then recalls the words of Djel Sannes, which was tortured by Hange and Levi back in Season 3. As Hange leaves, Sannes wished her good luck and warned her that one day there will be someone to take on their role again. He warned her that every person has a role, where one person can take the place of another. The next regime will carry over the task of the previous one. When members of the Scouts begin acting on their own to undermine the military, Hange is reminded of this warning that there will always be people to perform the government's role and to play the mutineers' role. Now that Hange is in a position of power, she wonders if this was how her former enemies felt then. What if, to preserve fragile order, she might have to deny her former allies, the people who brought the Scouts to their place of recognition ? As the Scouts lead Floch’s group into prison, Mikasa sees Louise in her cell, where she expresses her admiration after Mikasa saved her and her mother from a Titan in Season 1. Louise wanted to know if Eren was the reason Mikasa joined the Scouts. However, Mikasa tells her to keep quiet to avoid more trouble. Mikasa then recalls a memory of the time she met and was saved by Eren from human traffickers. The anime portrayed the flashback with an uncomfortable horror-esque vibe that made Eren look more like a killer than a savior. We sometimes forget how brutally Eren killed the men who would take Mikasa’s life. To him, they were nothing but “animals in human form” and “too dangerous to be left alive”. Yet, Eren had to become as vicious and animalistic as the animals that would hurt him and Mikasa. The fact is that Eren was always capable of darker things. It scares Mikasa immensely. Gabi's fanaticism clashes with the ruined village she sees. Marley destroyed Kaya’s family but to Gabi, this was a consequence of Eldia’s crimes against humanity. Eren did exactly the same thing against his oppressors while trampling upon innocents. Eren destroyed Gabi's home but long before that, Marley broke down his, Kaya lost her mom to Titans. Whether it's Eren's mother or Kaya's mother, they did nothing wrong, they knew nothing of Eldia's past. It’s a replication of the Eren-Reiner conversation in a much more emotionally-charged confrontation between Kaya and Gabi. In the two conversations, Falco was here. Falco found the missing piece of his understanding behind Eren's attack in Liberio. He tells Kaya that her mom did actually nothing wrong. He understands the situation more than anyone here. As they head home, Kaya tells the two about the girl who saved her, someone who inspired her to be kind enough to help Gabi and Falco escape, Sasha, the woman Gabi killed. In all the three dynamics, past words or actions by other people play an immense role and affects deeply the characters in the present, just like the past has effects on the present world they live in (or in our world).

You guys did a great job reacting to this episode the only thing you missed was Sasha’s dad. He said welcome to the braus family

Cheryl Lambert

We aren’t born with hatred and bigotry. These are learned behaviours. The contrast between Gabi and Kayas’ characters defines that so clearly. Sadly it’s all that Gabi knows.

Gatha Naranath

Personally from now on all the way to the end is my favorite part of the entire show

There is such a lots of things I want to say in this episode, but I believe everyone else will do so for me. So I'm only going to say... Man, I love Gabi's V.A. so much. First when I heard this actress(Ayane Sakura) is going to do Gabi, I wasn't that exited. But hearing how she did this is unbelievable. It's so amazing and awesome. Thank you for your great reactions! Can't wait for Monday. Have fun and take care :)

Tom Bombadil

Saturday episodes are the worst cause that means we don't get one tomorrow 😭 😆

Val

Great reaction fellas! The realization at the end that Kaya is the girl Sasha saved, and Gabi killed Sasha, was amazing 😂 but it seems y'all didn't catch the bigger reveal! Those were Sasha's parents who fed them 😬 the dad said "welcome to the BRAUS stables." And Kaya mentioned being invited to eat at a restaurant where a Marleyan works. Remember Nicolo invited Sashas dad? That's what Kaya is talking about. Oooohhhh boy shit is getting DEEP can't wait for next week's episodes 😭

Cheryl Lambert

Silver lining. It will take a little longer before they finish the series and it’s over.

Slussh

I didn't recognize this either on my first watch through and it surprised me even greater in the next 2 episodes, I think it's best we don't reveal this to them please for a greater shock to them!

MV

The scene at the end with Gabby, Falco, and Kaya is another great one to watch in dubbed. It hits me so much harder

Shivo

First things first, I love your guy's reaction and commenting again after a while because I was busy with Finals so I couldn't watch your reactions until now. Second when gabi and Falco arrived at the horse stables, notice the man who was said to have a southern marleyan accent said the name of the place they were at. "Braus stables" that's what he called it, Braus being Sasha's last name, Sasha Braus. So I'm pretty sure that guy was Sasha's dad since we saw him before when he went to Sasha's grave and met Niccolo in a previous episode. So thinking about it, Sasha's dad just met her daughter's killer and gabi just met the father of the girl she killed both of them unknowing of the other's identity. Keep up the good work

IQLou

True, the mod will decide. I think they should wait to know too but they might catch it on the rewatch

IQLou

Arian is that you? Jk haha I like the dub but season 4 is sooo good in sub!! Kayas voice actress went off here with the "NANDE!!!" and I just can't get used to Gabi's voice in dub 😅

Val

Perhaps, but I'm almost certain they'll catch it in their rewatch anyway since it's easier to recognize voices when watching in a language you understand. Regardless, it was intended to be pretty obvious. We saw Sasha's dad just 2 episodes ago and he's the ONLY character who has a country accent. That and they straight up said Sashas last name lol

Yusan

I think it would be great to see J&J's reaction to finding out about Sasha's parents on screen in the next few episodes instead of them learning it from the comments.

IQLou

🔥🔥🔥S4 is so amazinggg. Great reaction!!

Nate

Mikasa having flashbacks and headaches after seeing Louise is actually incredible. I've rewatched AOT many times and I only just realized the significance of that scene, and what Louise/Mikasa stands for. I don't think even most rewatchers will catch the meaning. Due to spoilers I can't explain further but this was one of those moments where you can't understand it until you watch literally the last episode. Isayama really sprinkles hints into certain things in every episode. Other than that, this ep was great. It covers one of the main themes of the show, which is racism. Kaya, Falco, and Gabi are all have their own perspectives on the race situation. Kaya is a product of nature, Gabi is a product of nurture, and Falco is caught up in the middle. Their dialogue to describe one another shows the line of thinking where people are racially discriminated due to the past actions of their ancestors. Examples of this in the real world are: anti-Arab racism after 9/11, Japanese/Korean racism after the Japanese invasions, and pretty much the aftermath of every conflict between warring nations.

Mikasa's flashback this episode is so interesting. When we first watched that scene in season 1, Mikasa views Eren as her knight in shining armor, someone who inspired her to fight for life. But now she views a different reality of that moment. She sees his violence and inconsideration for human life, equating them to animals. This was the view of the MP during the trial on what to do with eren after he first turned into a Titan. "One cannot help but question the violent nature of the attack" is what Nile said (season 1 episode 14- dub). considering Mikasa's current turmoil of disagreeing with Eren's decisions but also wanting to protect him, she is remembering moments with Eren that feel different than before because she can now see his actions for what they were. violent. Its intresting that she remembers that when lousie asks if she joined the scouts for him. It seems that Mikasa is questioning her feelings toward eren, we saw Armin doing the same when he questioned if he really knows Eren.

Muh-la-lay

Also love that AoT didnt forget Sasha's death and treat it as a shock value thing. I love the way they remember Sasha and how much she has an impact on people even after her death.

Season 1- Humans VS Titans Season 2- Titans VS Titans Season 3- Humans VS Humans Season 4- Everyone VS Eren

Maka

Falco and Gabi called Reiner for help during Eren's attack, remember? That's why Reiner said he heard their voices. Gabi's sentence that Kaya shouldn't pretend to have forgotten the history of the Eldians hit hard, because that's exactly what it is - their memories have been erased. Gabi reminds me a lot of Eren. She suffers from the attack on Marley, keeps talking about wanting to kill Eren like Eren always wanted to wipe out the Titans. She is stubborn and doesn't believe things even when they are right in front of her face like Eren didn't want to believe Annie and R&B were traitors.

San Pav

Exactly. That's how I realized. I didn't recognize them immediately, man, that hit hard.

Clareth Fajardo

Is it just me or the password doesn't work?? 🥲🥲

This is a good episode to point out that Season 4 is so brilliant because it takes the strong suits of each character in S1-3 and shows in the “real world” (S4), things are a LOT more complicated. Eren - Strong suit: stubborn and always willing to fight. This characteristic is heroic and just in S1-S3 when the enemy is mainly titans. But what about a real war? Eren’s “strength” led him to kill civilians and children. Mikasa - Strong suit: unconditional love and protection for Eren. This is awesome in S1-S3. But what if your unconditional lover causes a terrorist attack? Maybe love should have some conditions. Armin - Strength: Wanting to see the sea / gentleness. Armin’s plan was wanting to talk, but the time limit on Eren / Zeke caused Eren to think Armin’s plan is too idealistic. So Eren attacked, and forced Armin’s hand in blowing up the sea. Hange - strength: Fighting against the govt in S3. It’s awesome to root for Hange in S3 as the underdog standing up to the government. But what now, 4 years later? Hange is part of the government, and is now also hiding information for what she believes is best for Eldia. This is by no means saying any of them are right or wrong for their actions in S4, just pointing out that Season 4 demonstrates incredibly well that in the real world, things are much more complex than the relatively simple frame of morality portrayed in earlier seasons.

Randy Flash

We could call this episode the full circle episode, so much happened. 1- Hangie is now hiding infos from the people and seems to work against their interest exactly like the Reiss/Fritz and the fake government used to... s/o to Sannes man, he really did warn Hangie lol 2-Luise was saved by Mikasa, she followed her career since, always aspired to be like her. Now as a Scout she is as Devoted to Eren just like Mikasa. 3-Kaya was saved by Sasha, and now she is trying to save Falco and Gabi just like Sasha would, not knowing that one of them is Sasha's Killer 4-In the post credit scene, Galliard is disgusted that they were led by a traitor all these years (Zeke)... and of course as he is saying this they show us Reiner's face 🤣🤣 One last thing, the southern Marleyan accent that Gabi recognized from that man. All eldians in Paradis are descents of Eldians in Marley, that Marleyan accent was just preserved all these years on the island by that group of people.

EdTheAlchemist

Yeah, Shogeki is the best ending song for aot, imo. I’d say the last 3 EDs are the best of the series. The one previous, this one, and the next.

MangoJuice

The parallels between the topics this show covers and real life events happening NOW should not be ignored. Especially in this episode when both Gabi and Kaya are speaking on their perspectives on how they were raised and taught. Propaganda, Racism, Generational Hate, etc. are all deeply relevant in our world today.. unfortunately.

Joshua Martinez

Your analysis is so correct about Kaya having so much patience/understanding and listening. Yet Gabi is wanting Kaya to accept guilt for the actions of her ancestors, during the great titan war. Even when she actively had no part in those atrocities or her mother which she had to expierence direct trauma, and Gabi says "its their fault for what happend in the past". But it's the same with Gabi too though, she lives with persecution based on past actions. Everyone wants someone to be at fault or have a villain they can point to for the pain they've lived through even Marley. Annie was right imo, everyone onles cares about themselves and their people.. Eldians, Marleyan's, everyone

CamilleR

I love how they use Sasha's death to give meaning to her life (Erwin throwback kinda). She created more impact to the show so far after her death in my opinion.

Kel

Next week we get two of my top 5 episodes!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Can’t freaking wait!!!

Sean Carroll

Facts, Sasha was the worst character in the show while alive but now is actually interesting because of the impact on other characters after her death

Kel

Yep. Those were the ones that really turned AOT into an obsession for me rather than just “This show’s pretty cool.”

Jay

Something interesting about this episode is how the political aspect has come full circle for the Government. Sannes (The interior MP who Hanji and Levi tortured) was lying and deceiving in order to keep order & peace within the walls, and we thought he was in the wrong for lying. But now Hanji and the current Government are doing the exact same thing to the people to try keep peace since they can't say explicitly Eren betrayed the scouts and went against orders. The people won't care because he paved the path for a new future, so in their eyes, it's not morally justifiable to imprison him. But this time, we're inclined to be on Hanji's (And the government's) side this time since he exploited the island's dependency on him to get what he wanted, effectively blackmailing the Scouts and threatening Eldia's survival. However, we try to justify their lying because we know what happened and the sacrifices that had to be made to reach the present moment. But what right did we, the audience, have to decide that the Scouts were in the right and the government was in the wrong? What sacrifices did Sannes and the other Interior MP have to make in the previous 100 years to achieve the illusion of peace they had in Season 3? How do we know whether or not it was a greater sacrifice than that of the scouts? We'll never know. But it seems like Sannes was right; there is an order to all things, and to keep that order, people have to make great sacrifices. Hanji is in the exact same situation that Sannes was all those years ago and she has to bear it whether she likes it or not.

Hippopi

They have a Southern Marleyan accent because it's like a US Southern accent or a country accent. He's not Marleyan, but the accent is common among country folk. It's only been 100 years in the walls after all.

Hippopi

I love that when Galliard says "To think we fought alongside a traitor this whole time" it shows a close up of Reiner's face. Like YEAH REINER, IMAGINE DOING THAT!

Jay

With all due respect Sean, let it go bro. Not worth bringing up this point again.

Hippopi

Also guys I think you're forgetting that Gabi has killed a whole bunch of people before. She blew up that train and then cheered and laughed when it killed those soldiers. Then she shot Lobov. Then Sasha. Then bludgeoned a guard to death. Also Gabi still wasn't convinced after the moment with Kaya - she said to Falco "Why are you leaking info to devils"

MV

Haha, I'm not militant about the dubbed, I just enjoy specific scenes. I do agree Gabbis voice is a bit intense though.

Kia

First time watcher here. That was Sasha's dad that welcomed them when Kaya invited them home right? He said welcome to the Braus family. This storyline is so heartbreaking because Gabi killed Sasha and now she and Falco are going to start learning that the people of Paradis Island are not devils through Sasha's family. Falco has more understanding and I hope that Gabi can come around. It's gonna take a while because it's what she's known her whole life. What they've taught them but I really like this story of them seeing the human in Eldians. At the end of the day, they are all human.

farah farah

****SPOILER ALLERT****** « HE DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE IN HIS FATHER INJECTING HIM « The way I laughed out soo loud and had to stop eating for a moment, damn that was beautiful

taetaebear01 (Lindsey E.)

Falco the only one ever to do ittttt. I love that kid, I’m really rooting for him. I also miss my girl Annie, I hope she comes back soon

Concepts94

this isnt a spoiler… its not mentioned… but the titan that ate kyas mother was likely connies dad

azure

i think its just because of its appearance. if you compare that titan to connies dad on that photo of his parents the resemblance is definitely there. also someone on reddit said that a production guide of season 2 confirmed it but i dont know if thats true

Mike Rees

I get frisson from Shougeki every time I hear it to this day. I love how in to it you get when the end of an episode really hits. You should check out the full length version with translated lyrics at some point
