Wait hold on. Am I reading a different edition? I can't find anything about being transferred to a different parish or Trappists. It just says, "The bishop had no compunction against calling in the police. But by the time the law entered the case Father Pitamont had disappeared along with some valuable articles belonging to the church." Not really any obstruction by the church, it almost seems like the Bishop was waiting for anything he can use to get rid of Pitamont, since the Bishop suspected Pitamont of wearing civilian clothes and going to disreputable parts of town.
