Block In Bootcamp: Memory Drawing #1 (Patreon)
Content
Stream Date: Feb. 18th, 4pm Oslo time
Memory drawing is a technique in which you try to recall and draw a previously seen image from memory. The aim is to improve your ability to store visual information and retrieve it for recall. It is time tested and a great way to improve your drawing performance overall.
We are going to be diving in at the deep end, so to speak, making a portrait drawing from memory. This first exercise will be part lecture and part demo/work-along. Because of this I want to suggest a warm up exercise:
- Choose a simple flat shape, such as a square, rectangle, or triangle.
- Study the shape for about 30 seconds, paying close attention to its size, proportions, and angle & details. Remove or cover the shape.
- Close your eyes and try to visualize the shape in your mind.
- Take a blank piece of paper and a pencil, and begin drawing the shape without looking at any references.
- Focus on the character of the shape- the angles, lines, and curves, as you draw.
- When you are finished, compare your drawing to the original shape. If necessary, make any adjustments to make your drawing more accurate.
- Repeat the process several times to practice and improve your memory drawing skills.
Remember, the goal is not to create a perfect copy, but to see how well you can recall and reproduce the shape from memory.
