Memory drawing is a technique in which you try to recall and draw a previously seen image from memory. The aim is to improve your ability to store visual information and retrieve it for recall. It is time tested and a great way to improve your drawing performance overall.

We are going to be diving in at the deep end, so to speak, making a portrait drawing from memory. This first exercise will be part lecture and part demo/work-along. Because of this I want to suggest a warm up exercise:

  1. Choose a simple flat shape, such as a square, rectangle, or triangle.
  2. Study the shape for about 30 seconds, paying close attention to its size, proportions, and angle & details. Remove or cover the shape.
  3. Close your eyes and try to visualize the shape in your mind.
  4. Take a blank piece of paper and a pencil, and begin drawing the shape without looking at any references.
  5. Focus on the character of the shape- the angles, lines, and curves, as you draw.
  6. When you are finished, compare your drawing to the original shape. If necessary, make any adjustments to make your drawing more accurate.
  7. Repeat the process several times to practice and improve your memory drawing skills.

Remember, the goal is not to create a perfect copy, but to see how well you can recall and reproduce the shape from memory.
