I'm seeing a ton of people saying they "need to replay all the KH games before 3 otherwise they won't understand it" and "Kingdom Hearts has a really intricate story line." And that bugs me! Because it very much does not!

So, no joke, here is a succinct summary of the entire franchise up until Kingdom Hearts 3 for those who want to save some time.
