FUN FACT: One of those Kai-recolors next to Kairi is actually part Sora! Can YOU guess which one?

Gotcha! It was both of them.

This video was hysterical, I love the art and the voices were stellar. I love these and many many round of applause to all the folks who work so hard on these for us ungrateful audience members. ;)

I still would argue that the story of Kingdom Hearts is indeed good, at least at its core, and it's the storytelling that is terrible and doesn't make any sense, and the dialogue ranges up and down on the scale anywhere from cringe to copacetic (but they're campy games, so the cringe end of the spectrum is where it most often lands in.) And the thing about light, darkness, hearts, bodies, souls, keys, and, most prominently, the MacGuffin* Kingdom Hearts itself being vaguely described in scores of flowery drivel and cryptic fustian is, I think, very intentional, and not so much because the writers are lazy (though it's probably a little of that, too) as it is because they want it to be "open to interpretation" so as to appeal to as many different people as possible, and let it all 'mean what people want it to mean', depending on what each individual brings to the table. And I know that annoys you as an author who "follows the rules" when it comes to writing, but it's not written for writers to be intellectually stimulated, it's written for common folk to absorb at their leisure and level of volition and for them to appreciate on an emotional level. Again, is that lazy? Heck yeah it is! But does it work? The results speak for themselves. So to recap, story and concept = good; narrative and story development = bad; intrinsic merit = ugly; and public reception = surprising and yet simultaneously unsurprising. *can we consider Kingdom Hearts to be a MacGuffin, as abstract and undefined as it is?

KH's story is actually pretty straightforward, but it's told in a very backwards way. This isn't some kind of purposeful "open to interpretation" nonsense, it's because Nomura didn't understand what the scope of the series was going to be before he started it and he keeps changing the rules at his own convenience. For instance, in Kingdom Hearts 2 the Nobodies have their own simple set of rules. They're formed when someone powerful becomes a heartless, they lose their memories, they have no hearts, and they kind-of-but-not-exactly look like their original form. No wiggle room for interpretation, very cut and dry. Then later in the series they decide Nobodies CAN have hearts if they try hard enough because they realized that people liked Axel and Roxas a LOT so they wanted to verify them having feelings (even though this being the case makes Org13's plan in KH2 completely nonsensical). Why did Xemnas tell them they couldn't have hearts? Well, he was LYING to them! It was all part of his MASTER PLAN we retrospectively made up that benefits him in no way whatsoever! "Open to interpretation" is when a character's motives are mysterious, but there could be multiple clear-cut reasons they're trying to achieve their goals. "Open to interpretation" is an ending that can be viewed in multiple ways, all of which make sense based in the narrative we've already been presented. KH is NOT open to interpretation. It's JUST badly written. Plain and simple. Simple and clean. If someone LIKES the writing in Kingdom Hearts that's fine, but I will argue tooth and nail against anyone who defends the writing as well thought-out in any way whatsoever.

Michael St. George

Fair enough. I see what you're saying, that it is poorly written. I will still say that it manages to be open to interpretation to an extent even if it wasn't written thoughtfully enough to rightfully achieve that, because people still do take in the story and elements, unpack them somewhat, and heavily project themselves and their own feelings onto them, reforming in their hearts and minds what and how good the story is, and what and how much it means to them. In that way, the games are [illegitimately] "open to interpretation." But I get what you're saying. The story has been sloppily rehashed and slapped together in such a way that it has no right to achieve this level of "accident forgiveness". And yet people go on privately enriching the story in their hearts anyway, accepting every new thread of dialogue and chunk of information to come their way as completely reconcilable canon.
