Omg I would loooove to see you react to the movie Heathers with Christian Slater and Winona Ryder

Haha to fake Buffy. Love when people watch this and see just how... weird this film was. No budget, the acting was question and writing did not fit the format of a film, which is why I find it hilarious when people still ask for a BUFFY revival film. Like, no, it did not work. The standouts for me? Donald Sutherland, Luke Perry & Hillary Swank! Hell, even Paul Reubens' work in this film is fun. But the film, even more so than the first season of BUFFY, is of the times.

When you we’re trying to remember the 90s heartthrob with curly hair that you thought was named Christian, I was thinking of Chris O’Donnell. Just me? I don’t think his hair is curly all the time but I’m thinking of him in the three musketeers specifically

A couple of things now that I watched the whole reaction. Christian Slater was a huge heartthrob in the eighties. At the time thus movie came out, he was still considered hot by a lot of girls. As to the guy you were talking about in Becoming (season 2's two-part finale), the one who comes to Buffy and tells her she's the slayer. It isn't the same actor. Merik is played by Donald Sutherland. I don't know who the actor is in the show. But he is supposed to represent the same character, her first watcher. They don't say his name, but it is supposed to represent Merik. They may not have given him a name in the show because it wouldn't have meant anything to viewers who hadn't seen the movie, and because, with it being a different actor, it would be easier for viewers who had seen both movies and shows to imagine it's the same character if they don't use the memorable name used for him in the film.

Two future Oscar winners: Ben Affleck ( whose one line got dubbed) and Hilary Swank. Hollywood heir Natasha Gregson Wagner ( daughter of Natalie Wood) and people still hate on this movie. So sad. It's so quotable. You can find so many times to use "Does Elvis talk to you? Does he tell you to do things? Do you see spots?" And "the error of my mistake" is one I use a lot. Or, a variation. And, the classic, "You broke up with my machine?" The white dress with black jacket combo they recreated in Prophesy Girl. The " the rest is silence" quote they had Giles use. The obvious clues to Joss being a Heathers stan: the Christian Slater name drop and the use of "what's your damage?" Also, 2 of Cordelia's lines on the show were obvious inspired by a line from Heathers. The principal here clearly being the Flutie prototype. Luke Perry at the height of his 90210 stardom. My best friend's older brother auditioned for this movie. Sadly, he was not cast. But, that's my connect to Buffy and so I could never hate this movie. Also, Randall Batinkoff is in it and I had a crush on him since For Keeps with Molly Ringwald.

To your question on the name Buffy, while it has come to be used a proper name over time, some have theorized it is a diminutive of Elizabeth. Some shitty younger sibling couldn't pronounce it right, so it went Elizabeth --> Ewizibuff --> Buffy. It may seem like a far reach for some, but keep in mind that nickname evolution is really fucking weird. Margaret became Peggy for God's sake.

Over the years (with my love of everything Buffy) I've been addicted to all thing's trivia on the topic. A few things you asked (possibly rhetorically) was in regard to the dusting of Vampires. I'm pretty certain Joss has stated it was a budget thing. Even in the first season of the show, you'll notice they cut away. I'm not sure which episode is the first time we actually start seeing the "poofs". He's also stated he had many issues with the movie. In terms of casting, there was around a five-year gap between movie and show. Kristy Swanson (who played Buffy in the movie) was already in her almost mid 20's. When it comes to casting shows (especially network shows) their goal is 'long running series', typically they try to cast as young as they can incase the show is a success and goes five-ten years. Though often it's difficult to find teenagers that can play complex life experiences (or at least that's what tv casting choices seem to say) often you'll see 26-year-old teenagers. Thank you for your beautifully genuine reactions. It's a new way of experiencing what we loved the first time. You make me laugh out loud so often!!! Please keep doing what you're doing. <3

Obviously a disaster of a film, but I had a blast watching your reaction. Your movie references 😆

Darcie, I don’t know if you wilsee this, but I lost my job of 27 years right before Christmas. I only have two Patreon but with no money coming in, I have to cancel it, I’m really sorry. Hopefully I can rejoin eventually if I can get a new job. Been really depressed the last week. Rich, RLucas3000@AOL.com. (My favorite episode of tv ever is coming up in 2 or 3 months or so, so I really hope I can be back by then!

I saw this movie on cable as a kid way before I watched Buffy the show and always thought it was fun. The story is that Joss Whedon wrote this movie with it being the same tone as the show in his mind. But the studio and director had a different vision. They took it way more camp. And while some of the dialogue and themes in this are clearly Joss Whedon, some of the tone is very different. And in the end Joss didn’t like the way the movie turned out. So he was very excited when 5 years later he was given the opportunity to do a tv show version where he had more control. But a version of this film with Merrick being her first watcher and the stuff in the gym did happen in the shows continuity but not all the details are the same. I believe there is a prequel comic book that has a ver similar story to this that is considered cannon but it’s for the most part based on the original script for the film which is very similar. The original thought of naming her Buffy was that Buffy was the prototypical “rich valley girl” name in the 80s. The original version of the character was always supposed to be the vapid valley girl that is captured in this movie more than the show. That’s why when we see her in the flashbacks in Becoming the season 2 finale she is much more vapid at her old school.

Buffy has been around for a long time as a pet form of Elizabeth. As a given name, it was most popular because of a character on the 1966 TV show Family Affair (which also featured a character named Giles). I've known of a lot of Buffy's over the years (including a Playboy playmate and a California senator) but they were all named after Family Affair, or after the Canadian singer Buffy Sainte-Marie. Some hate on this movie, but I've always loved it. It's so fun and I still quote it to this day. The Republicans line is extra-funny given how Kristy Swanson (Buffy) has turned out. Yikes. 😆 As for Christian Slater, oh man you need to watch Heathers (1988). That is his most famous film, a freakin' classic, and is also where the phrase "What's your damage?" came from. I also love that the guy you thought was Christian Slater turned out to be Ryan, who played SMG's love interest twice. That's just hilarious.
