Buffy in this episode is like the combination of Kendra and Faith. What a way to spend my xmas eve-eve :P

One of my favorite episodes. Was thrilled to see your reaction to this one. <3

Yes! Rupe is a hero in this (I love this episode sooooooo much 😍). Remember, he did want to be a fighter pilot (or possibly a grocer ;) ) when he was 10, very heroic in a ten year old boy's eyes 🥰 But the way he's still got a gaggle of teenagers with him is very cute and the fact he has the guts to get out of that car, go Rupe!! And Buffy is so great, I agree very Faith like but colder and less prone to hitting the dance floor I guess :D and her relationship with Rupe is just amazing in its complete difference from our universe. She's so cold without Rupe and her friends. Killing Xander with a stone cold expression on her face. Calling Rupe 'Jeeves' lmao I agree, Xander and Willow look WAY hotter in this universe. And Rupe too tbh, obviously stubble suits him :) I feel for Cordy though, what a lot of shit she goes through in this episode :'( Favourite line? "Because it has to be." Hits me every time :'(

Such an amazing reaction to an amazing episode! I've just realized when you mentioned that we will maybe see Spike&Drusilla that we have not seen Darla at all this episode and she was Master's right hand in season 1... and without Buffy showing up in Sunnydale, Angel would not have probably killed her so she would still be alive as well as Luke...I missed her :( but it was great to see Willow&Xander kind of replace their roles.

charlie ray

about the demon at the begining..... its design seems to be based on lovecrafts "cthulhu " and a LOT of bands use the image of this monster (metalica ect) and spins on that creature are in popular culture....... anyway google "cthulhu" and you will see what i mean! xxx thanks for another great reaction

angelcakes

yeah so basically a superego and a id without their ego... no wonder she died lol

Not a faerie? Okay technically not a faerie, but have you seen the depictions of a Fachan, or the Bean Nighe, or Red Cap, or Jenny Greenteeth, or Peggy Powler (etc, etc). As a friend of mine once said, "I don't f*ck with the fae*" :D

Bud Haven

I noticed in this episode that the prophecy that Buffy would be killed by the Master was still fulfilled. She was defeated by him the first time too, and was only saved by Xander.

Richard Lucas

i feel like Angel somehow, while waiting for Buffy to come, killed Luke and Darla. The Master eventually replaced them with Xander and Willow. And keeps Angel alive and tortured because of what he did to Darla. My big questions are: 1) Did The Mastor and the Mayor already have a big confrontation here? 2) Is Amy’s mom still inside Amy’s body, still living her high school dreams as head cheerleader? She is certainly a potential big bad The Master would have to eventually overcome. 3) What nightmares did The Master have, before realizing their source and simply killing the boy in the coma in the hospital?

Jessica Roth

It's the eternal debate: Anyanka the Cynic wants PROOF. How does Giles know? Things could be worse. But Giles is a Hero. Giles believes that Good can win. And it's that belief that sees him through,

Jessica Roth

I think Angel did kill Darla. Which is why I love The Puppy. In S1, Angel kills his old gf to save his new one.. Nice enough if you're Buffy and.a certain amount of progress as Angel seeks redemption…but not truly heroic IMO. (And perhaps a bit worrying if Buffy ever wonders what happens when SHE is the ex.) But here, Angel (I think) killed Darla because Darla needed killing. Period, full stop. Lives at stake, Angel stakes girlfriend. The same justice that Buffy showed him in S2. Well done, Puppy. Woof, :)

Jessica Roth

Two realities, and twice ol' H.J. (the Master's name is Heinrich Josef Nest, although that's only in the scripts) kills Ms Buffy. Way to go, dude. Keep that "make Buffy dead" streak alive. :) The difference here is that there's no Xander to save her with the CPR.

Guurrlllllll!!! This was a wild ride !!!! 😜 Had a blast hanging with you virtually 🤗🤗🤗🤗

OMG! “Leave me alone, Cordelia”. That was exactly how I felt the first time I heard the “Payless” line. I love it!! This entire episode is a masterpiece…. The lighting, the shots, the acting. It’s all so good! One of my favorite shots is when he’s summoning Anyanka, and she just walks out of the shadows. It’s just so subtle yet so creepy! And yes, her voice is also creepy. Another great reaction. I always enjoy them and your sense of humor so much!!

I don't know. I think I disagree. I think back to Angel in season 1, especially before episode 7. He was a big wimp. He was just around to keep an eye on Buffy, but all he did was giver her information, but he stayed far away from the fight. I think she inspired him to join the battle. In this alternative universe, I think he never got inspired and he just ran out of hiding places and was captured. With regards to Luke, I could see the Master sending him on some mission when he managed to rise. As for Darla, I think she just left. Two reasons for this. She was with Angel for over a hundred years as he wandered the world causing mayhem. Doesn't sound like a homebody to me. Secondly, I think Angel being captured and humiliated constantly in a cage would sickened her. Not because she cared for him, but because she had spend a century with what was now regarded as the puppy. It would be a constant humiliation for her. If the Master refused to let her kill him, or if she couldn't bring herself to kill him, I would think she would leave and put as much distance between him and her.

Plus, I'm pretty sure the Pirates of the Caribbean had at least one character that looked similar to it. Those are some pretty famous shows and I'm pretty sure the character's face was prominent on a number of posters advertising the show, so one wouldn't have needed to see the movies to recognize it.

2023-05-28 03:09:22 Such an awesome episode. Vampire Willow is a hottie, no doubt about it. Kind of a little too into S&M for my taste though. In this episode, I would say she's probably the closest a vamp has come to channeling Drucilla, without the whole vision thing going on. Of course, I just have to mention the Cordelia death that follows right after the Cordelia death fake out. I mentioned in the last vids comments how the death fake out was kind of good in that it forced fans to acknowledge just how much they now cared for Cordelia. Again, watching her die here was painful, although thankfully we were 98%ish sure it would be reversed as it happened in an alternative universe. Still, painful to watch. For me, the biggest element of this episode was the stark portrayal of why our Buffy is successful when most other Slayers fail. Sure, our Buffster is great and can fight very well. Still, the one thing that really differentiates her real successes are her friends. She would have died long ago without them. The Buffy we find in this universe is cold and cynical. She's cut herself off from everyone, including her Watcher mostly. In fact, the way she, without hesitation or planning, enters places where one could easily expect an army of vampires, proves that she is at the point of having a death wish. Her entire existence is fighting and the only rest she will get is death, and she appears to be looking for a vacation. This point was made previously with Kendra too. Kendra spent pretty much her entire life with her watcher, trained and learned nothing but slaying. Never formed any relationships with others. Then she promptly dies because she can't withstand Drucillas hypnotic stare. I mean, there was more to her death. Like, Buffy would have survived because she was better at using what's at hand to make a weapon, whereas Kendra was lost because she had given her stake to Buffy and couldn't manage to find a replacement. Still, I think Kendra's lack of connection to the world made her weaker. It will be interesting how this point, Buffy's connection to the world through her family and friends, comes out with regards to Faith. I think part of them focusing on this element of Buffy's slaying was to bring it to mind now that Faith is becoming part of the crew. At least, something to keep an eye on I thought when I watched it. Also, just have to say, kind of loving the play with the thumbnail pics, although it would be neat to add a couple of orange dots to Cordy's neck to signify her vampire bites from this episode. It's up to you. Man this season is fun. So looking forward to your next reaction.

i agree, this episode was so fun and this season has been so great - so much happening all the time! i didnt see this comment until after but love the idea of vamp bites!! thanks as always for being here for the ride!

@Jordan Haddow--Vampire Willow does explicitly say that Angel tried to save all the people that were going to be raw materials for the Master's blood plant (presumably his failed attempt to do so being what led to him being captured), though.

I'll take up Jessica's usual role as the contrarian here to say that I would like this episode so much more if they hadn't resorted to that incredibly cringeworthy slo-mo with overwrought instrumentation for all of the Oh-So-Ironically-and-Metaphorically-Appropriate killing sequences at the end. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it *ruins* the episode for me, but it does transform what otherwise might have been a favorite of mine into a "yeah, that was fun." Clearly other people find that sequence highly effective, though, so it's probably just me that finds my eyeballs rolling right out of my head during it. It doesn't help much that it's a Marti Noxon script, and therefore about as subtle as a brick to the head to begin with.* Further overegging it with that unnecessary slo-mo and music...I mean, good heavens, WHY? The thing that I like the very *best* about this episode? Nobody remembers the AU world, and as a result: nobody learns from it, nobody grows from it, nobody changes from it. I was all tensed up, waiting for the inevitable pre-Golden-Age-of-Television moralizing glurge to come out of the woodwork, and then it didn't. Good show, show! I also find SMG's acting as AU Buffy really enjoyable. I like how her portrayal seems to incorporate certain qualities from both Faith and Kendra, as well as from OG Buffy. It's a solid performance. * Don't get me wrong - I really do like a lot of Noxon-penned episodes. They are all very blatant with their literalized metaphors, though. Sometimes that works for me and I totally love it, and then at other times it annoys the heck out of me, and I honestly have never been able to figure out what determines which reaction I'll have.
