I mean, tbf there's "don't break up with someone on VDay" but at the same time is it right for Cordy to SPEND VDay with someone she knows she's going to break up with? I don't think it's right for either of them, for Cordy to have to pretend everything's fine or for Xander to be kept in the dark about how she's feeling.

The beginning of when Buffy's hair starts to get so good! lol one of the things I mostly remember about this episode...

Yes. Angel IS wearing eye-liner. But so is Spike, just not as much. Is this another case of Angel being mean…he takes all of Drusilla's attentions AND he's hogging the eyeliner? That bastard… DO the boys want Xander, too? I think they're all supposed to be angry at him…but this being Hollywood, there are bound to be a certain percentage of male extras whose acting isn't skilled enough to cover for their normal reactions to a hot guy, I suppose. Oz gets a lot of props for punching Xander, but I don't know. Yes, it's dramatically surprising and yes, standing up for Willow is great…but he admits he doesn't know what's going on, because Willow was basically incoherent. What if she wasn't actually accusing Xander? "Even Xander…I mean he tried to be nice…but he just doesn't understand…how can he be this way? It hurts so much!" or something like that. It feels as though Oz is jumping the gun, here. Plus, it's a sucker-punch. Bad form, Oz. Confront Xander, yes. Demand an explanation, yes. Be ready to back it up with fists if need be…okay. But hit a guy when he's down and wasn't even looking? Points off, sorry. (OTOH, Oz's "Oh" in reaction to the "Buffy's a rat" news was perfect. I always thought Seth Green over-sold the "actually, it explains a lot" when Oz finds out about the vampires in "Surprise", but this is right where it should be. And I have to love his reaction to Naked!Buffy once the spell ends. It would be easy [and IMO cheaply one-dimensional] for Oz to be SO IN LOVE with Willow that he doesn't even react to Buffy…but how realistic is that? You get a chance to see Naked Buffy, you look. [Oz doesn't even cover his eyes, although he does aim the flashlight elsewhere.] I love he's so flustered he doesn't even think about giving Buffy one of his shirts, like she gets the button-up and he keeps the tee. LOL.) Dan-watch: he's in the hallway walking behind Xander when X is dealing with getting dumped the day after. Why do we get the shoe-cam in that Buffy/Giles scene in act I? I think it's because this is James A. Contner's first time directing on the series and he wanted to show Joss he could be creative. Results were mixed; Contner gets more directing gigs but AFAIK, we never see shoe-cam again. I guess Joss was unimpressed with the foot-age? (Sorry!) Do we want more Amy? (The network didn't; reportedly, they didn't think Elizabeth Anne Allen could act and fought against Joss bringing her back.) I'm mixed; I like the character, and spells can be useful. But this is supposed to be BUFFY's show, not 'the Avengers". I don't want to diminish that "one girl in all the world" deal by surrounding her with vampires and witches and werewolves and such. Besides, eventually you run out of powers, whereas courage/humor/research/support (which the gang currently provides) are easier to distribute. I mean, what's Xander's gig going to be…Sweater Man? (Yes, yes, he still has that military knowledge. But you can only steal weapons from the Army so many times before they catch on. Even if the "Secured Area" door on the base in episode 14 *wasn't even locked* .) (Another reactor pointed that out. I totally missed it. Huh.)

One of my favorite speeches/lines by Cordelia was the sheep one. The more I think about it, the more I love it. It shows a ton character development for her, breaking out of the mean girls circle and gaining her own confidence. The line also makes me reflect on my own life and decisions. Avoiding something because you're worried that others will find it weird/dumb- usually that's associated with high school insecurities but I still experience those thoughts in my mid-late 20s. I'll think "I really like this polka dot dress but what if it looks weird? Idk maybe it's too much to wear to a coffee shop?" which sounds silly when writing it out but I bet most people have thoughts like that. The idea of "don't do things to fit in" isn't new but I liked how Cordelia put it, "Why in the world am I scrambling for your approval?" I love it when the show has these lines that make me think or give me inspiration :) Agreed that Xander not accepting Buffy's invitation was the bare minimum. But it was still nice to see and I'm thinking maybe it helped him reflect a bit on his feelings for her.

While, as episodes go, this one isn't really that great, I actually really like it for a tonne of reasons. The first of which is, for me this episode is all about Cordy. That moment where she pulls that locket out from under her collar is the exact moment that her character forever switches from the outside the circle mean girl to someone we all can no longer help but care for. It says, yes she's human and has a secret side full of complexity that we've so far missed. I really love Cordelia because she has grown so much and has so much potential to grow more. Beyond that, this episode is great in so many other ways. First, it shows just how much we shouldn't underestimate the "monster of the week" episodes. A lot of people like to dump on these non-main story arc episodes as being lousy, but they can have far reaching ramifications. I do love to go on about Lie to Me and Ted, but many others contribute too. Here we have Amy and her witchcraft storyline, born in the early days of season one, continuing here. It also contributed to that little joke scene with Oz previously. Now, Amy has been upgraded to a full blown witch who is powerful enough to turn someone into a rat. Potential for the future? Plus, there is the love spell. Many shows that involve witchcraft do a little take on the love spell. Here, we see the Buffyverse stance on it. It's deadly and disastrous. In fact, I would claim that they've made it one of the worst spells you could cast. Imagine if Amy hadn't turned Buffy into a rat. It was easy to be distracted during that scene. At first, we wondered if Amy had wiped out Buffy entirely, then we were relieved and probably even found it a bit funny to see her as a rat. In reality, Amy saved a lot of lives and Buffy a lot of grief. Every other female there grabbed a weapon and became murderously violent. Buffy would have just started killing everyone, including Xander, with her bear hands. I won't go much into Xander, other than I think the writers and producers of the show have kind of failed him, not just here, but throughout the show. Let's face it, Xander is the least liked character. Here he casts probably one of the worst spells one can cast out fo spite. Why not dislike him, right? Well, the show gives reasons to empathize with him, but I think they've consistently done a terrible job at doing it. First, he's one of the those funny guys that's always joking. Many times, these are the type of people who are covering up pain with humor. Still, that doesn't just come across. Also, they tend to use quick little quips to give glimpses into that world Xander is covering up with that humor, but it's definitely not enough to get the point across enough for fans to build empathy for him. In just this episode, he makes at least two self deprecating remarks. One was how valentines day usually means a restraining order. Another is about how he managed to get such a good grade as a D-. Both of these cover his immensely low self esteem and self confidence. The first one though comes across as creepy. The second one comes across as he's just lazy. In reality though, I think the show was intending for them to show a glimpse of how his home life is terrible. Xander is always out with his friends and doing stuff, despite getting F's for grades? It implies his family just doesn't care about him. Talk about a long walk the fans have to take to get there though. If you go back through episodes and listen for them, you will find those little quips all over the place that add up to a picture of Xander's home life as being fairly dismal. Still, how is anyone supposed to empathize with him from so little. Buffy in the season premiere was a total jerk to everyone and did some nasty things. The show though, took the time to really look into the situation and show that she had PTSD from dying. It even had her take a step towards healing herself when she crushed the Master's bones. It also showed her friends acknowledging her struggle and supporting her. When has Xander had any of that? I can understand why fans don't like him and don't blame them, but I do kind of blame the show or it. Well, I can't tell at the moment, in the tiny little text window Patreon gives for comments, but this feels like it's super long, so I am going to stop here and just say I'm looking forward to your next reaction.

Yeah Xander shouldn't get too much credit for doing the bare minimum 😅 He should absolutely not have cast a spell like this in the first place. We did get a really funny episode out of it, though! And it's a great episode for Cordy's ongoing character development. Well. Hopefully Xander has learned his lesson about messing around with the black arts for petty personal reasons!

This is such a fun episode! I also love how even Drusilla is affected in this one 😂😂 Also quick question but how do I access the discord? I joined it recently and have NO idea how to use it 😅

I believe Elizabeth auditioned for the role of Buffy initially. Clearly Joss thought she could act at least, or I guess he wouldn't have given her a part as a side character.

To answer your question, rats can and do eat anything - including cheese. And just to prove the point, please go to YouTube and search for "pizza rat." You're welcome. I'm impressed with Alberta's pest control program, and for anyone else who's interested: https://www.alberta.ca/history-of-rat-control-in-alberta.aspx. I've had to take care of some rat infestations in my day and felt really guilty about it. Rats are a pretty amazing animal. They're very smart, friendly and even show empathy between kin groups. My nieces keep a couple as pets. They're cool, but it's good that Alberta was able to stop an invasive non-native species like that.

good observations! Though I did kinda giggle at Buffy's "bear hands" comment haha, sorry! Visual imagery!

DARCIE: Where did that cat come from? ME: Well, sometimes a Mommy Cat and a Daddy Cat love each other SO MUCH… More prosaically, where you've got rats, you've got cats. Shea Stadium (former home of my NY Mets) was known as Cat Central. 55,007 fans dropping food all over the place brought the rats, and the rats brought the cats. Simple as C-A-T.

I find this episode hilarious because it is everything that you shouldn't do when casting a love spell

This is the first time I truly noticed and appreciated the use of violins in this episode to build the tension. This episode is slightly problematic if you think about it too hard, but overall it's just a fun little romp that's super enjoyable to watch for what it is.

It's a (good-natured) joke among Star Trek fans that the main difference between Captain Kirk and his evil twin is that Evil Kirk wears dark eyeliner. I don't know how widespread that knowledge is outside Trek fandom, but there's a good chance that the people working on Buffy knew it. So it makes perfect sense for Evil Angel. (To be honest, I had never noticed his eyeliner before you mentioned it.)

darcieswatchingbuffy

ohhh the boys were supposed to be angry! i didnt get that i got more... maybe everyone was just in love with xander LOL but then the next scene rupe wasnt so i was like okay its just the women. never thought too much about the reason behind oz punching xander i just have to admit it was quite satisfying LOL. but that analysis makes sense! i was hoping there would be some comment on the weird shoe shot! i figured it might just be trying to be creative...maybe somehow foreshadowing the view of buffy as a rat?... but probably not LOL just felt so weird!

darcieswatchingbuffy

no you're right, i think everyone has those thoughts! i know i do every day! even with making content i find myself having little inside conversations with myself just saying.. "make the content you like not the content you think people want". and yes its tough for me to give xander bare minimum points LOL but agreed maybe it will help him reflect a bit. :) PS i hope you wear the polka dot dress to the coffee shop. ALWAYS wear the polka dot dress to the coffee shop. :)

darcieswatchingbuffy

yes! the locker moment where she is wearing the necklace was such a good moment. i so far have enjoyed most of the monster of the week episodes! i like seeing new villains and i always find the creativity is never lacking in these episodes! even if i do find myself missing the main storylines, i know theyre coming back eventually! and im always down for some witchcraft too hehe. really good analysis on xander and i agree - i have the hardest time with him. on one hand i feel like im *supposed* to like him, he's part of the group and has this "good guy" vibe to him. but i dont think the writing helps that case - like you point out. i do try! and he does make me laugh a fair bit! but its really hard with him lol. thanks as always for the great comment!!

darcieswatchingbuffy

agreed! i really liked the insight we got into cordy this episode! and.. it was a pretty wild episode overall... but no more playing with magic!!

darcieswatchingbuffy

agreed LOL the moment dru couldnt walk in and angel is all sly like "oh looks like youre not invited" or whatever he said i was like ohhhhhhhhhh so good! you made it to discord!! :D

darcieswatchingbuffy

LOLOL pizza rat, got it! when i first moved to alberta people told me the rat thing and i was like but how... and thought they were messing with me! but nope lol its a real thing! i remember in elementary one of my friends had rats as pets and i learned so much about them from him, i believe he still has rats to this day. i dunno if theyre necessarily for me.... but i get the hype! i mean.... ratatouille am i right?

darcieswatchingbuffy

ohhh thats cool!! i mean evil angel may have to work on application but i give him props for adding it to his aesthetic😌

Sika6061

Yeah! Ratatouille is delicious! Haha. I knew someone once who had a real rat phobia. I sent her a picture of Remy as a joke one time. It...did not go over well. 😏 They're a cool animal, but I don't think they're for me either. Their tails give me the heebie-jeebies. Also, I had to deal with a contamination issue where they got into a compost container at work. There were, oh, hundreds of rats in the dumpster. It totally freaked me out. I think they're amazing creatures intellectually, and I can enjoy petting one if it's offered, but nope. Can't keep one in my house. PTSD for sure.

David Meadows

Well to be fair, he had to apply it without a mirror. He's lucky he didn't lose an eye. Though as somebody further up pointed out Spike also wears it, my guess is that Dru applies it for them.

Sarah

If you think about it Amy turning Buffy into a rat protected her from whatever Angel was planning. I feel like all of the Xander episodes are just weird fever dreams 😂 Cordy is probably the only person that would swoon over someone wanting to put a love spell on her. Idk what that says about her tbh. It was great seeing more use of magic though.

R J Walker (FumblesMcStupid)

I have such mixed feeling over this one, on the one hand NO XANDER, jeez, you can't do that to Cordelia, but also, ffs Cordy, don't dump Xander on Valentine's Day because of your friends. There's so much good and bad about Xander all the way through (bare minimum, Xander, bare minimum). Mostly though, I do think this is a VERY funny episode with a bit main arc advancement. Favourite line - 'We have to catch the Buffy rat.' Cracks me up every time! The two scenes with Rupe and Cal jkhgfhjkhgfhjk, the first is just heart breaking but the second is amazing, the shooting script actually says that Cal is 'valiantly fighting' (owtte) the spell as she's trying to get out what she needs to say to Rupe. DAMMIT Xander!! ;) AND Rupe was pretty calm about Xander confessing UNTIL he saw it was affecting Cal and then he got REAL angry. And THEN, when it's affected Buffy and put her in danger, the gloves are off!! Xander, don't mess with Rupe's favourite gals lol I do love that Cordy was wearing the necklace (awwww) and I'm glad they're back together. They DO fit! And I like getting Amy back. It makes the universe seem more real that characters from earlier episodes are still around. And I SERIOUSLY love Spike, Dru, and Angel!!!!! What a gift!!

Jessica Roth

Oooh, that's as another for my "lemons into lemonade" list, i.e. when the group turns things intended to be hostile for their own benefit. Like when the Hellmouth Demon in "Prophecy Girl" broke the Library table so Buffy could impale the Master on it. (It would have taken Giles *forever* to make a spike like that with his little axe.) Or how Ethan's spell from "Halloween" ended up giving Xander the military knowledge that lets Xander defeat the Judge and thus save the world. Amy ruins Angel's plans! Lol, go Amy! Take that, Fang-face!
