Its HYBE....visuals and dance far outweigh singing in their training and general philosophy (all the acquired companies and groups aside like fromis 9)

Edward Lee

I mean....thats what sells and every decision made is for money at least in kpop. The good thing tho, at least in korea the indie and ballad genres are strong so there are avenues for the true vocal geniuses

Edward Lee

Its why a small part of me wishes you'd wander into the ballad and indie space....vocal talent is a long tradition in these genres all the way back from the 50s/60s. There have been and are some crazy crazy crazy vocalists in korea

Jonathan

the subs pissing you off was so real.... i was shocked that it wasn't properly subbed coming from an official network also just wanted to ask if you are ever going to make a reaction to aespa's first concert?

hope

I think this is a major reason as to why HYBE groups are really comparitively unpopular in Korea compared to intl - Vocally underwhelming groups tend to not do so well

Edward Lee

This might be a show to just check out the performances (HYBE loads those fairly quickly). The show itself is a little.....basic? not quite as funded? Makes sense tho, no reason for JTBC to spend gobs of money on it like MNET does with it's series. Given how annoyed you were doing the watching to the point of not even watching performances in their entirety......maybe if you ARE going to react, just reacting to the performance videos will be better 9especially if they don't get the subs issue straightened out)

Ballads are definitely not our reactor's favourite genre though. If you want to get him on it, you'll need to prepare a very well thought out playlist :)

Much as we like to complain, Kpop does a wonderful job of exporting itself (like their cars, electronics) They have an understanding of what works in different countries and usually market the correct music to the correct audience The Chinese market is probably the closest to the Korean domestic market in terms of tastes, the Japanese market is slightly different, etc.. and Kpop figured these markets out awhile back Hybe's success is that they found the key to unlock the Western audience, by figuring out how YG broke through initially. And the lesson learned there is mainly visuals + hooks + dance. The other aspects (vocals, artistry) are bonuses that only matter if you managed to gain an audience To me, there is a good reason why. The above is what Western music industry lacks and Kpop is filling the gap. They don't need good vocals, genuine artists, etc from Kpop because there are many Western artists who already provide that locally. Its the same reason why film snobs wonder why the global movie audience is so "stupid" and only wants to consume silly Hollywood spectacle movies. Its because that's what the local film industries cannot provide due to lack of budget. If the local audience wanted a sensitive, moving film, they have a local film for that, which is more relatable than an "indie" film from the West. Kpop, I feel, is largely filling this same spectacle gap when it comes to music for Western audience. That's why Hybe gears it that way.

Oooooooo you ate that!! And it makes a lot of sense! They're filling the right space. Never thought of it that way!

Koko3op

Yeahh I'm considering doing that next time cos it's annoying watching a performance you can't even hear the critique of. Unless they have proper subs.

Koko3op

Hahaha I WAS VEX. Erm I dunno, I feel like I don't go to aespa for performance/stage presence and they have a small catalogue. I'll consider a concert once they have released a full album I think.

Here’s episode 2. Some one recorded the Hybe live version and put it on YouTube. It’s fully subbed. https://youtu.be/L0lKuSqB6SM

yeah that makes sense ! surprisingly their concert has a decent amount of unreleased songs and solos (since the official recording was before spicy). they actually did pretty well stage presence wise; although beyond live did them a bit dirty with the camera angles. the live vocals actually vocal-ed like 60% of the time! edit; in case you wanna watch w/o recording: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GJAH2PWOwVevVkc_jpJ15sV25AmG77xm/view

Have you watched street woman fighter?

Lex

I highly recommend! So many iconic moments, big personalities, competitiveness and everyone is actually grown. There's drama that makes the show more entertaining but the main focus is on the actual dancing. They may talk smack about each other but in the end of the day they really respect each other. Women supporting women we love to see it! You'll definitively recognise quite a few of the dancers and ofc the judges.
