The start of a new short story commission for Invada.

Janice bit her tongue as she wiped her forehead, a part of her wanting to complain about how hot it was up in the attic, and about being dragged up there so early in the morning. The rest of her, however, knew that was what a kid would do, and she wasn't one of those anymore, was she? She'd graduated from high school last week, and at the end of the summer, she was heading to college... She was mature enough that she should be able to help out without whining, not least of all because it was mostly her old things that they were going through, trying to clear out some space. And this was one of her mother's few days off work, and she was doing it without making a fuss, so Janice should be able to as well.

"We really don't need any of this, do we?" she asked instead, as delicately as she could, hoping it would come off as helpful, rather than lazy. "If we got rid of everything, we wouldn't need to open up the boxes, or..."

"You say that now," her mother said, "but you might want something from here later on, and then you'd be sad if you threw it away, or donated it, or whatever."

Wasn't that the whole reason they were here now? They'd saved everything, it seemed, 'just in case'... Janice definitely wasn't going to need her old toys at college, and even if she did, she doubted she'd have room for them, sharing a tiny dorm room with another girl. And if she did have a kid some day, would they want to play with the same toys she had? Probably not.

But she shrugged anyway. "Okay," she forced a smile. Why were they bothering with this, then? Was her mom going to let her get rid of anything? "Why don't we start over here?" she moved to the far corner in an attempt to move things along, knowing that was where the oldest stuff likely was.

She opened up a box, and was greeted by the sight of a collection of folded up frilly dresses, and overalls, and what seemed to be a t-shirt at first glance, until she saw the snaps and realized it must be a onesie. "Here we go," she announced, grabbing the latter. "You know your sisters will be more than happy to give me plenty of new baby clothes, if I ever need them, and the Hendersons next door just had a baby, so they can have these."

When the onesie came unfolded in her hand, however, dangling downwards, she was shocked to see how big it actually was. "Oh," she blushed. "Well, maybe not now, but eventually..." That was way too big for the newborn she'd seen in passing a couple times. In fact, it looked too big for any baby she'd ever seen.

"Where did these come from?" she frowned, digging through the box, finding that the rest of the outfits were of a similar size. Underneath them, she discovered a package of diapers, mostly empty, and took one of the few remaining ones out, a shiver running up her spine at the feel of them on her fingertips, and the soft crinkling sound they made, both bringing up faint, almost forgotten memories. She didn't even know they made diapers this big! And they were definitely baby diapers, judging by the infantile print on them.

"Don't you remember, sweetie?" her mother asked, stepping closer and peering into the box. "Potty training you was a nightmare... We barely got you out of them before you started first grade! They were afraid they were going to have to make you repeat kindergarten just because of that!"

Janice cheeks warmed; she definitely did not remember that! "W-Was something wrong with me?" She would have thought she'd recall having some sort of sickness serious enough to affect her potty training, but she didn't have many clear memories from that time.

"No, no," her mom shook her head. "Nothing at all... You just loved your diapers too much to let them go!" Janice's whole face lit up at that, and she quickly set the diaper into the box, closing it up. "That's just how some kids are. We had to hire a special babysitter to help get you out of them. I think her name was Yvette?" her mother smiled, not seeming to notice her daughter's embarrassment, or think anything of it. "You're right, though, we may want to put those somewhere we can find them, in case the Hendersons need them in a couple years."

Janice moved the box over by the ladder and went to work on a different section of the attic, but her thoughts remained there. There was no reason for her mom to lie to her about this, and those clothes were definitely for someone older than two or three, when most kids would be out of them... Some of them were big enough that she could probably still squeeze into them now... She just couldn't imagine how, even as a kid, she'd liked wearing diapers so much...

Then again, she had felt a little something when she'd held that one... And that kept needling at the back of her mind as she kept cleaning, and after they were done and she was back in her room. Without fully knowing why, she found herself getting into the car, driving to the store, wandering to the diaper aisle...

Sure enough, the diapers were there, still with the same babyish designs, and in sizes even bigger than the one marked on the package from the box. The biggest one, in fact, had a weight range listed that she fit comfortably within. She knew she was pretty small for her age, having had most of her growth spurts when she was young, possibly before she was out of diapers, now that she knew how late that had happened... But she wasn't so tiny that baby diapers would fit her, was she?!

The next thing she knew, the package of diapers was in her arms, and she was giving it a squeeze, feeling her heart flutter as she heard that same crinkling from the attic, even through the outer bag. It wouldn't hurt to give them a try, right? And the box of clothes was right by the ladder... She could stuff the rest in there, and nobody would know... She'd put one on, just to see if it fit, and perhaps to find out if she could remember what it was that she'd loved about them as a little girl, and that would be that...

Fortunately, her dad was still at work and her mother was cooking when she got home, letting her sneak the package to her room with neither one seeing. She stuffed them into her closet until after supper, then spent the majority of her evening questioning what she'd been thinking, wasting some of her graduation gift money on them until, right before bed, she gave in, ripping open the package, taking one out, unfolding it...

The smell was intoxicating, whisking her right back to a happier, more carefree time, in a way that the ones from the attic hadn't been able to, thanks to the faint scent of mothballs that had infiltrated them. She heard herself giggle as she slid her panties down, knowing right away that the diaper was plenty big for her, that it was going to fit her, and that, as insane as it sounded, she was going to love it just as much as she had when she was younger...

And she was right, on both counts. It was snug in all the right ways, bulging between her thighs as she toddled over to her mirror, feeling safe and secure, her bladder already letting out a few dribbles automatically as she stared at her reflection in awe.

Her parents hadn't wanted her to have to get a summer job, so she hadn't, but most of her friends had, which meant she didn't have many of them to hang out with, and her parents both worked... If she wanted to, she could wear her diapers for most, if not all, of the summer... And by the next morning, there was no doubt in her mind that she most definitely did want to do that...

"See?" Chuck lifted up the bag of garbage to reveal what was underneath. "I happened to catch a glimpse when I was getting ready to take the trash out."

Susan hesitated before leaning in closer, sighing as she recognized what she was seeing, spotting the design on the strip of plastic poking out from the smaller trash bag stuffed at the bottom of the can, mostly, though not completely, hidden. "I knew she was acting strange lately, but I never thought..." She sighed, shook her head. "Maybe she's babysitting for someone, and..."

But they both knew, even from the small bit of the diaper that had escaped the trash bag their daughter had stuffed it in, that it was too big to be meant for a baby. And from how full, and lumpy, the bag was, there was no question that there was a lot more where that had come from.

"What are we going to do?" Susan asked. "We can't let her go to college in diapers!"

"Well," Chuck said, "I was asking around, and it sounds like Yvette is still babysitting..."

"Do you really think it would work again?" Susan pursed her lips, then shook her head again. "I guess we don't have much of a choice, do we? I don't know how else to deal with this. Her methods worked last time... We just have to hope they still will."

Chuck nodded. "And that Janice will forgive us for putting her through that again..."

"Don't worry," Yvette reassured them when they called her on the phone. "If anything, I'm surprised it took this long for her to relapse, as attached as she was to them... But I would be more than happy to come remind her that only silly little babies wear diapers."
