"You'll see," Luna said, as defiantly as she could manage. "She'll tell you the truth." Unfortunately, it came out more like, "Ga blah... Guh boo ta toof."

"Of course she will," Nanny smiled down at her. "Now, let's get you out of that stinky diaper, okay?"

Luna blushed and nodded, wriggling on her back as the woman untaped her night-time diaper and began wiping the icky mush away. She could still remember how humiliating it had been, that first time, trailing after Nanny in the grocery store - but not too far, since the child reins the woman insisted she wear kept her relatively close, and even then she'd been having trouble keeping her balance if she was too far from something to steady her balance, though now it was far worse - and feeling that awful urge, too embarrassed to say anything, knowing the bathroom was so far away, then whimpering as her body took over, and she squatted... Now, the past couple mornings, she'd been waking up like that.

Actually, she had no idea how many days it had been... For any of this. Nanny had shown her the calendar one day before - she could count to one, at least! - but the only reason she'd been able to decipher what any of it meant was because Nanny had pointed to the box for that day, and then the next one over. There were so many strange symbols and glyphs in the boxes, it had almost made Luna's head hurt trying to figure out what they all meant, and she hadn't even deciphered any of them.

But today was the day her friend came home. It felt like a very long time since Luna had seen her, and all this had began... Now, though, she would finally tell Nanny that this had all been a mistake, that her real daughter had been with her this whole time. Luna could go back to being a big girl, and wearing real panties... She'd almost forgotten what they felt like. Heck, she'd almost forgotten what a potty even looked like! Nanny had asked her the night, while Luna had been playing in her bubble bath, if she knew what the strange white thing in the bathroom was, and it had taken her a few minutes to remember.

She was so excited, she could hardly sit still the whole day, wiggling the whole time Nanny spoon-fed her breakfast oatmeal, and as she laid on her tummy and colored in pictures for Mama - her friend, rather - which only made it harder to keep her crayons inside the lines. She couldn't even bare to lay down for her nap, although a quick spanking when Nanny caught her out of her room at least got her to stay on her bed until it was time to 'get up'.

Finally, she heard a car in the driveway. She tried to scramble to her feet, only to stumble and fall and continue on her hands and knees - it was just quicker to get around that way - to the window, pulling herself up to stare out. There she was... Her freedom...

She crawled to the front door, then stopped, knowing she wasn't allowed to open it on her own for anybody, and waited, Nanny standing behind her. Finally, her friend pushed it open and grinned. "There you are!" she exclaimed, bending down and giving Luna a big hug and a kiss. "My sweet baby!"

Luna couldn't help but giggle, yet, at the same time, she was babbling something meant to be, "No! I'm not your baby! Tell her!"

"She's saying she missed you," Nanny 'translated'. "She was a good girl... For the most part."

"Well, that's about the best I can hope for," the other woman laughed, patting Luna's padded bottom. "Hold on, let me go get her."

There it was! Luna's hope reignited... She wasn't sure what her friend had been talking about, but she was going to go get her daughter, and Nanny would see... Luna really wasn't the little girl... She went back to waiting, feeling even more impatient now, but when her friend reappeared, she wasn't holding a child...

Luna couldn't feel too disappointed, though. She squealed in happiness as she saw the huge teddy bear, forgetting about her plight instantly as she reached up for it. Her friend chuckled, carrying the big toy into the house and to Luna's bedroom, setting it down so Luna could hug it, unable to help herself at the sight of something so huge, and yet so adorable.

After a moment, however, she had to remind herself that this wasn't right... She hadn't been waiting for a present from the trip, she'd been waiting to see her friend's daughter, to prove that it wasn't her... She shook her head, turning back to the two women watching her, sucking harder on her pacifier. "Where is she?" she babbled, or at least something very slightly resembling that.

"What's she saying?" Luna's friend asked, smiling.

"Oh, it's hard to tell," Nanny shrugged. Luna glared at her in frustration, starting to say it again... Then, for a moment, she remembered. Her friend didn't have a daughter... She never had. So... Why had Nanny shown up? Why had there been a bedroom for one, fully stocked with diapers and clothes that not only looked like they were meant for a little girl, but were in Luna's exact size? "She knows what she should be saying, though, doesn't she? Come on, sweetie, say, 'Thank you, Mama.'"

Luna frowned and shook her head, whimpering behind her pacifier. This was all wrong... But Nanny glared at her, made her shrink back against her new teddy and reflexively say, "Tah mu, Mama." As soon as she said that final word, it all became clear.

"You're welcome, Luna," Mama bent down, kissing the top of her head. "Now, you play in here... The grown-ups are going to talk in the living room."

Luna nodded and went back to snuggling her teddy, knowing that she should do what her Mama told her. And why wouldn't she? Obviously, she was no grown-up, so it would just be boring to listen to them... She'd much rather just stay here and play, like the good little baby that she was.
